    Cape Fear Whales

Came across these two whales about 20 miles from Southport on the way back in last Sunday. I think they are Wright Whales but not sure, don't know a whole lot about whales... We watched them for about twenty minutes. They would surface every three or four minutes. Even from about 100yds away you could hear them exhale through their blowholes when they hit the surface. Pretty cool, never been that close to them and only seen 'em one other time from a couple miles away.

Any tuna around them? Usually up here, find the right whales, find the tuna.

I do know that humpbacks are regular visitors to the area. I've
seen humpbacks in the mouth of the Capr Fear River Channel.

The Fort Fisher Aquarium tracks a mature female (nicknamed Salt) and her calves - pretty cool stuff...

At first I thought humpback due to the white patches on the tail. But that 2nd pic sure could be a right whale. I don't see a dorsal. A rare find. There's only about 300 N. Atlantic right whales on the planet!!!!

FYI It's illegal to be within 500 yds of a right whale. Might want to edit out that little tidbit

And as Dunn said, these 50 ton behemoths are some of the best hunters in the ocean. They'll corral tons of bait fish on the slack tides and the tuna go friggen nuts plowing thru the bait. But those whales look like they're just trucking along. Majestic animals. Thanks for posting.

Box, no land in sight, just waves on the horizon. Another few miles before you could start to see Bald Head.

No tuna around, this was only in about 50' of water and these whales didn't seem to be feeding, just lumbering towards the SE.

Definitely something neat to see and I was surprised to see them that close to the shoals...
