CAPE FEAR BLUEWATER OPEN TOURN
We fished the Cape Fear Blue Water Open this weekend fishing was 2 out of 3 days. Fished on sat and sun. Had Derek and Sean in the pit and Stuart and Josh on the rods, myself at the helm. Fished straight off on sat on a couple of good bootom spots mahi bite was real good lots of slingers and a few gaffers since the tournament required mahi 10 lbs and wahoo and tunas 25 lbs the small mahis were becoming a nuisance. After pounding those 2 spots all day we ended up with 13 gaffers a handful of slingers and 2 yft's one didn't make weight and the other was 51.8 lbs good enough for the daily and to hold 1st place on day 2 we also weighed 2 mahis along with the yft for the 3 fish aggregate.
Day 2 we were greeted with w-sw winds and a confussed ocean based on reports from sat sounded like everyone caught plenty of mahis but we needed another tuna or wahoo to stay ahead so right back to the previous days spot to work the bottom. Slow start no bait and no marks found us trolling to the north to a couple of other usually productive spots. First bite came around 10:30 mahis but a better grade of gaffers than yesterday. Found a grass edge up in shore about 1/2 mile 2 deg change 40 fathoms worked this till about 1:00 caught 12 or 13 mahis on it lots of wood around it had to be on point the entire time. Worked the last 1 1/2 back to one of the good bottom spots looking for a tuna or wahoo we fished side by side with a buddy of mine on the charter boat Music Man Capt David i had called him to the grass line to catch some mahis for his crowd. We worked the area pretty hard with him catching a couple of blackfins and us catching another nice gaffer then finally we get a good burn it down bite. after a few minutes we get a good look at a nice wahoo. Derek gets set and Sean plants the steel. With that we headed home with a box full of fish and wishfull thoughts in our heads along with a 6 foot ocean and 20+ kts of wind on the nose. We started out at 17 kts but with Music Man in tow he couldn't keep that pace so i slowed to 15 kts where Dave could stay tucked in. We could have made 18-19 kts but i aint the kind of guy to run off and leave someone who needs a ride. After about 20 miles it got a little nicer and we were making 20-21 kts now. After weighing in and then cleaning the boat we went over to the awards to see where or if we still stood. This was how we ended up.
2nd place over all 51.8 lb yft
daily on sat 51.8 yft
daily on sun 44.0 lb wahoo
1 st place 3 fish aggregate 120.20lbs
51.8 yft, 44.0 wahoo, and 24.4 mahi
Taking home $5,742.25 gave 300.00 back to the tourn for charity.
Thanks to all we fished with enjoyed the company.
Will have some pics soon.
