    can't touch ballyhoo

My hands started swelling a few years ago after fishing trips but I never thought it was a big deal until my last few trips. It got so bad during the Big Rock I had to go to an Urgent Care. After a few more trips to the Doctor, our conclusion is that bionic brine and/or the preservatives they use in packs of ballyhoo are causing it.
    Anyone else have this problem?
I guess it's live bait and plastics from now on...

I believe I'd live with being called a sissy and wear latex gloves instead of your alternative.. You can buy a gazillion of em for $10.
I feel for ya friend. My Brother in law lives for striper fishing on Kerr Lake. If he so much as touches one, his hands and arms break out in a bad itchy rash. He always wears crabbers gloves in handling any Stripers now.

Over the years I have developed reactions to chemicals we use in lures. Some of the stuff I can only do in small amounts for a small time... My hands have also grown sensitive to chum to the point they can tell how fresh it was ground. I bust out if the fish had been sitting aboard boats for more than a few hours... Think of a bunker and the changes it makes before your eyes over a couple hours... That translates to how it is at grinding time.
Hoos that are stored on ice before processing start breaking down the same way. If its only happening with that brand it could be the brine... Try regular salt on another brand and give your hands a bleach and water bath after handling...

You could try a different brine combo - I mostly use a mix of kosher salt and baking soda - equal weights of each. Not much in there to be allergic to...

If it is the ballyhoo, then take up knitting - Just kidding - Wear gloves, buy pre-rigged, or find someone to rig them for you...

    Good luck

I tried all kinds of gloves- the latex kept ripping and I couldn't get the baits right with thicker ones. Maybe I can find some thicker latex gloves or put multiple layers on.

Clt Capt pre-rigged baits? I know you didn't really mean to type that...

    Thanks for the offer Box.

Mary- I think you've come up with my best option. Alan- quit screwing around and rig that bait!

See if you can get your hands on some nitrile surgical gloves, they are stronger than the latex and won't rip as easy... Also if you have problems with your hands an alergic reaction to latex can be deadly...

If you want to try some nitrile gloves pm me and I can get some to you...
