BULL REDS! SUNDAY! LET ME HERE IT...

What's your favorite rig type for catching BIG bull reds. They are running and we are going to get 'em!

Usually we have 4 lines out. 2 - flat-free lines (one hooked in the shoulders, one hooked near anal fin). 2 lines with 1oz weight, one nose hooked and the other tail hooked...both under balloons. This is all in the surf (similar to the striper fishing you NE guys get into).

So, what say you??? Let me hear it!

oh...bait is mullet, croker, pinfish or menhaden (if available).

Ditto on what is posted above,Not a better Big Drum rig out there. Fresh mullet, spots, pinfish work great for bait, whole or cut.

Galazio, capt. Owen has a slider rig setup for the surf as well. I'll see if I can find a diagram.

This thread by JMS-ILM should be a good start. http://www.sportfishermen.com/board/...-rig-9685.html

Thanks guys! That is pretty much the same rig we use...exception being that it is alot shorter from hook to weight. I did read that it helps from the bait being swallowed... I'll shorten them up and give it a go. Thanks all!

Fresh cracked crab works pretty dam well down here. Mullet a very close second or stinky on the bottom.

I like fresh cut bait or sometimes large whole shrimp, live is even better.

IMO it won`t affect your hook ups to keep your weight to hook closer to 3 inches and bend the barb down.

Keeping the weight closer to the hook helps to prevent that huge mouth from sucking that bait so far in.

That bull red will inhale and bury that 7/0 hook.

You may have to reach behind the gills with needle nose to release the hook. When you do, that very old drum, and you, will be blessed the barb is bent so you can quickly release him

fishing the ocean shoals up here, i like using a fishfinder rig with a 6 or 8 oz pyramid sinker, with 2 ft of 80 lb test leader and a 10 or 11/0 owner octopus hook. Whole live declawed blue crab for bait. nip the points off the shell for a little scent. i like using menhaden too, but then you run the risk of catching sharks and other critters. Using only the hard live crab, i normally catch reds, cobes or blacks , or get skunked, without the trash fish.
