Mahseer are a member of the carp family. Gets up to 100 lb or more. Often found in fast rivers from the north of India (Himalayan foothills) to the south of the country. Considered the subcontinent's greatest game fish. Mahseer fishing used to be very very popular amongst the Brits during the colonial days - plenty of Indian anglers still go after them. As you would expect, threatened by native overfishing, habitat destruction etc.
There was some great footage of them in the 'Freshwaters' episode of the BBC Planet Earth (co-produced with Discovery Channel) documentary.
