Braids effect on reel spools

This past year I replaced all my line with braid in hopes of going a few years, rather then every year between replacment. I really like the concept, now I just replace my top shots every coupe trips, and the capacity is amazing.

But this weekend I had a fish realy take some line and got to see a inch on so of the braid come off and noticed some white tarnishing on the spool and getting conserned that I am not getting the salt water off the braid enough to prevent corrosion on the spool. With mono I never noticed this.

Now should I remove the braid every month or so and clean the spools then reinstall the braids and coat it with something, mabe corrosion X, but then I am worried it will cause the braid to slip. I am hoping this is not a common problem and how can I prevent damaging the spools over the season. I use the stuff year round so is there a interval that
people use to flip there braid and ck the spools.

Thanks for the help

I just back spooled some JB last night on a few 30wides and there was no salt. At the end of the day (everyday we go out) we just push the drags to full strike and rinse with fresh water really good and wash with a mit and soap then rinse again. Then we let them stand in the cart to dry. Make sure when you spool your spectra you spool it on tightly. That way the water wont penetrate as deep into the bottom layers of spectra and keep the spectra from digging into the spooled line with a big fish. I spool mine on at 10-12 lbs. As far as flipping the spectra mine JB was 2 years old and looked like brand new on the bottom 2/3rds of the spool....Mark

Easy solution

That can happen if you have fish run off lots of line and then wind it back on under high drag- the saltwater presses into the spool, the salt builds up, and you can get some pitting.

The fix is extremely easy- whenever you spool up clean the spool, get the first few wraps on, and then hit the entire spool with a layer of carnuba wax. Let the wax dry and then continue spooling up. The wax will protect the spool from pitting, and you're good to go until you need to change line...or until you get spooled

Jerry Brown wrote an excellent article on all topics relating to spectra, including spooling up and corrosion prevention.

Basil do you do this when customer send you reels?

Reason I ask is, I have a pair of 50w that you spool last season that I have yet to see close to the bottom of and wondering if they should be unspooled and wax the spool.

I have a reel that has had the same braid on for 5 years with no problems. 3/4 of the spool has been out at times, so its not like the liner never saw saltwater. The spool is as good as new. But now when I get a new reel I put a coast of wax on .

I use Boeshield corrosion protection on all reels that pass my way. I still recommend that every year you strip and re-pack the line to make sure you don't have any problems.
