Government has gotten way to big!

Amen to that Jared! Big alone might be OK, but big and incompetent is a real problem.

I am definitely coming south to fish for snappers when the grouper closure takes effect.

By the way, a 28 mile run gets us in 90 + feet of water, but it is still "inshore" by our standards. Count your blessings!

You come down, and I will do my best to ensure you all the snapper you want. Seems you already know the bite. The big ones are easier to catch than the little ones cuz then crush a bait... none of the tap tap tap stuff the smaller ones do. Once you know the bite though, its like grocery shopping.

I would say mid-end of Feb the snapper bite will start back up in force with in 15-20 miles. Problem with January is its a lot harder to find nice weather and the best bites are farther out. No shortage of good bottom around here for them.

Nice box of reds! Enjoy catching those reds and other bottom fish while you can. Next year the closures on grouper will be from Jan thru the end of April, and snappers will be from Jan thru May and American reds will very soon see a 20 year closure. If the recreational fishermen and the commercial bottom fishermen don't come together very soon, within the nest 3 to 4 years all offshore bottom fish out to 40 miles will be permately closed to both recreationals and commercial bottom fishermen. When Bush admended the Magnason fisheries act to say that the ASMFC could make decisions on tempory and permanent closures on "best available data", remember that term, instead of the best scientific data, he screwed both the recreational fishermen and commercial fishermen. Now the conservative and Peta people along with their repersenatives in the congress and fisheries management have got the tool that they need to stop all offshore bottom fishing. Even though there is no data to support the closures that are about to happen, a matter of fact no data on the snappers at all, only on a few grouper species, and that data happens to be over 12 years old, and no matter that there is better American red snapper and grouper fishing now that there has been in the last 10 years and improving every year, the closures are still coming. The government can make bailouts totaling trillions of dollars for businesses and banks that have been practicing bad business and making bad loans and breaking laws bad enough that there some of them might even go to jail, the government can not come up with a few thousand dollars to do a current and accurate study to keep from closing down a fisheries that will put all commercial bottom fishermen, all head boats, some charter boats and numerous recreational fishermen out of business. Not to mention local seafood markets that will go out of business.

This just isn't right and if the recreational fishermen don't think this will impact them, guess again. This will mean the you can no longer go offshore to any reefs or artificial reefs past the 3 mile North Carolina state limit and drop a bottom rig over and try to catch even a black sea bass, because you can potentionally catch a snapper or grouper, so you will be in violation of federal law and supject to the penalties which are very severe. Sux doesn't it!! The only thing that will stop this is to get the recreational fishermen and commercial fishermen together and contact all the local and state represenatives and senators and governor and tell them that you want them to put forth a bill that will return the Magnason fisheries act back to it's original wording. Talking to the ASMFC is useless!! Until the wording is changed they can't change anything nor will they even consider changing anything. They have already admitted that the data is wrong and that it will put a whole industry that brings millions of dollars into the North carolina economy out of business, but they said thats the way it has to be! This is not right! I thought that I lived in America? I thought that the government was supposed to help and work for the average business man and do what is best for the country, not just a few special interest groups.

Everyone has one! This is just my opinion.

Word has it that the closure is off (not gonna happen) at this time. We will be fishing grouper and snapper this winter after all, thank God!
Surely the gov. will come back. Let us hope that there is real data and sound science behind any future recommendations from the SAFMC next time.
