    ? for Box

As you can see I'm new to the form and don't post often.

Question for Box and anyone else that would like to jump in.

I have completed all of the required reading and watching of videos. (Thanks for putting that information out there) On the Box way to set up a planner rod.

Here's my question how do you set-up the planner as far as terminal rigging? Is it 400 lb momo on the clips and how long is that connection and how big (long) are the clips?

I know you say the Tiagra 80 is the ticket, but could you down size the planner and go with a differant reel? $ may prevent that particular reel. Understanding that you may give up some potental depth by using a smaller planner.

    Thanks in advance.

Box's form is the best I've been on light, fun, not too serious, but tons of great information. Thank You!

Does anyone know if the older shimano triton 80 wide (which is in mint like new condition) performs on a planer setup up to the standards of a newer tiagra 80?

    Gotta start somewhere,

I can't afford the 80's set-up myself. I used the Penn 9/0's on up to # 12 planer's. Not the first class ,high dollar way, but it's caught some pretty fish. A 67lb wahoo is the best so far. I just bought two 12/0's to use on the bigger planer's. You can buy alot of needed gear for the price of an 80 and matching rod. I like the "gold" reels as much as anyone, but the "Trashy" stuff catches too!!! Frank,SeaPower

I've pulled up to a 12 on 50w with out a problem. You just have to make sure you pay attention. With the amount of drag required, if you don't back it off really quick after a fish hits, you're going to lose him. As far as the 9/0's go, I've pulled 16 and 24's with them commercial fishing. Never had any trouble with them, however, you MUST use the star drag to let line out. If you let it out in freespool, when you throw it back in gear it has a bad habit of stripping gears due to the sudden resistance. With a lever drag, or backing off the star drag, it's more of a gradual increase in pressure, which is MUCH easier on the reel. The rigging on the smaller planers is bacically the same as with a 16. You just have to make sure your loops are crimped far enough apart so that the planer will trip with no problems.

I AGREE WITH CAPT. LYNDON HERE......I LEARNED PLANNER FISHING ON A 9/0 SWIVEL TIP WITH WIRE LINE MIND YOU IN FRONT OF OCEAN CITY, MD MANY YEARS AGO CHARTER FISHING AND WE KILLED A LOAD OF BFT ON THEM.......
LIKE HE SAID IF YOU GO WITH THIS OPTION MAKE SURE TO USE THE STAR DRAG........YOUR REEL WILL LAST AND YOU WON'T TEAR THE GEARS UP......I AM NOW USING THE SET-UP THAT MARTY HAS AS WELL AND LET ME TELL YOU - IT IS THE DIFFERENCE OF......"SITTING IN AN OLD METAL CHAIR AT THE FIRE HALL TO LAYING BACK IN A BRAND NEW RECLINER".............THE 9/0 WILL DO ANYWAY AND GOOD LUCK!

I currently use an 80W for larger planers - 16 & 24, but I also have an AVET 50EXW/2 that will work for a 16 in a pinch - although it works really well for a 12.

You need to make sure that your drag is in good shape for the 16 on a 50.

If you do use a 50, keep the sea conditions in mind. If it is rough, you will put a lot more strain on when the boat is rolling...

I fish a 80w triton on my planer rig, and it handles a OS 16 just fine. I think I could up a bit on the planer, but it works great like it is. In the past I used a 9/0 penn, it did ok with a #6 and #8.

Like everyone else, Id love a 80 tiagra, but /i dont get offshore enough to justify the cost for a new one.
