Got the Sails Call moved from Wrightsville up to Pirates Cove a few weeks back and have been waiting for some sort of break in the weather and schedule in order to chase some tuna. Well, we knew Saturday would present a window and so my man Larry P and I worked on setting up a crew. Now I know most of us do have to work to pay for our fishing habits but after hearing excuses on why folks couldn't go that ranged from generic and pathetic all the way to"My cousin's wife's sister's cow is having nipple surgery", we decided it would just be the 2 of us.
We followed out a beauty of a Viking called Bailey's Ark on the way to the fishing grounds and we were running 30 knots and he was leaving us like it was tournament time! I'd love to know what he has in the hold!!
Hit the break and started our troll with our eye on the clock and the weather. The forecast had predicted it would pick up in the early afternoon and after a few suspicious knockdowns (no teeth marks or bites...looked like bill marks), we made a few moves based on radio chatter. About 12:30 we decided it would be best to pack up at 1 to be safe. At 12:55 she starts to sing.......................................................................we get the lines cleared and chase it down and get most of the line back. Needless to say with just 2 of us, it was a little tense at times as we circled. We changed directions about 45 minutes in and got the head coming to the top for the stick and stuff.
Rough ride in...we only made about 18 knots and were fortunate to jump in behind the Trophy Hunter who was beating down some snot for us smaller guys. Just shy of 72". Good work LP! There is a massive sushi-fest going down in Cary tonite.
