    BLACKBACKING AND BLACKSMOKING

Sunday I get a PM with an opportunity I have been waiting for...A chance to watch the Master of MEATNBOX get it done. After a few childcare wrinkles were ironed out I started frantically looking for layers of polypropelene and gloves I had not worn since last year. I know better than be late to go fishing with WAHOONBOX and was determined to leave with time to spare...in case I ran into any delays. Well boy did I! It started with a 10PM-4AM bridge closure in "Little Washington" NC that diverted me 30 miles and ate up 1hr 20 min of the extra two I had to get there. After making it back onto 17 South I knew I would be cutting it close now. According to the miles to go and the clock it appeared I had about a thirty minute window..... When I saw the Railroad Gates just north of Newbern start fashing red and getting ready to lower my first reaction was to hit the gas pedal...I screached to a stop at the last second as the gates rested horizontally. SON OF A -----! Guiness book could have scratched two new records that morning because this was the world's LONGEST and SLOWEST train on earth! An AGONIZING 27 minutes of pain as I watched the clock tick...I'll never make it to Marty's house now...I just hope I can find the boat. I did and the engine was running when I strolled up...the Temp had risen to a blistering 23 degree's on the thermometer.
Off the HC CANYON went about twenty minutes later in a stiff breeze out of the North. It was frigid. We had an uneventful day on the water with the exception of watching the RUNOFF slide one through the door a little after daybreak. The water was a little choppy and there were lots of birds working but we never got our shot this day...Maybe day two would be better.

Day two started out with a lot less breeze and alot more Mercury showing on the thermometer. We set out under cloudy skies in the dark and the moon that shined on me all night the previous night was veiled in cloudcover, thank goodness. I was tired of looking at it. Capt Mike pulled the sticks back and the baits were deployed. A short time later when light was just barely starting o show in the sky I noticed what I thought was a bait shower just of the port side. I looked and saw it for sure this time and just as I opened my mouth to say something so did something else. Instead of saying did you see that bait I said there he is as the line popped from the rigger clip. WAHOONBOX reacted like a cat and cranked to take up the slack. As the line came tight nobody was there and BOX quickly started jigging the line. Three jerks and it was ripped from his hand and the game was on. I cleared the starboard planer and box cleared the port side while Capt. Mike kept the line tight and stomped on the bridge for Taradise to come out of the heat and into the fire. I got to do the crankin and Captain Mike did a great job of responding to the fishes every move. About twenty minutes in through the Blacksmoke we saw nothing but a Blackback right under the transom and BOX yelled "he is still VERY MUCH ALIVE". I was so relieved when the first gaff was in the fish...for two reasons....one being that I could no longer be the reason for the fish to get away if it did get loose and two...MY HAND WAS ABOUT TO FALL OFF FROM GRIPPING THAT SLIPPERY ASS PIECE OF GOLD HANDLE. When the fish taped out at 78 inches I was elated! Despite that fish fighting like a "chickenshit" he still worked me over and I did not want to watch him swim away.
The rest of the day we trolled around with the monkey off our backs and did not get another bite. We did see about a 1 acre scholl of Tuna DESTROYING the surface of the water but that show was over almost as quick as it started. After watching the video you will get a little taste of how funny Marty can be when he is being good ole WAHOONBOX.

Captain Mike, Thanks you very much! It was a treat.

If any of you yankees are looking for a Charter up North this spring, summer, and fall...you should definitely look up HC CANYON Captain Mike and the lovely PITCHICK TARADISE.

I hope ya'll enjoy the video- you better thank pro-heat for that(he knows what a pair of scissors looks like).

I THINK THERE SHOULD BE A POON BLANKET....SORT OF A GOING AWAY MEMORIAL FOR THE GIANTS......MAYBE ONE WITH A RISING SKIULL...I MEAN SUN ON IT

AND WAY TO GO THERE BARRY!

"BLACKBACKING"..............AS I REFERENCE THIS ANIMAL FROM TIME TO TIME

WHEN YOU CRANK IN A TUNA...AND HE IS JUST UNDER THE SURFACE SAY DOWN TO 10 FT.BEHIND YOUR STERN.........AND YOU SEE ONLY HIS BLACK BACK......TRUST ME.....HE AIN'T DONE....ESPECIALLY WHEN THE WATER TEMP IS COLD AND HE CAN HANG!!! BLACKBACKING......HE IS ONE BAD ANIMAL WHEN THIS TAKES PLACE.

PATIENCE........BE COOL AND BE PATIENT....LET HIM DO HIS THING......THEN....YOU CAN DO YOURS............

ROCK N ROLL GEOFF......YOU HAVE DEFINITELY RAISED THE BAR!
