    Bite Me Big Rock Report

Well it didn't turn out the way we had envisioned but a good time was had with new and old fishing friends alike. Team Bite Me included WAHOONBOX, Whitey, MikeLPL, Capt Lou and myself for the Big Rock this year. We sailed from Wrightsville Beach for and planned to scour the southern boundaries to rack up some points or find that one special big girl (feel free to insert obvious NC dating joke here) to put us in contention.

With Capt Lou at the helm and special guest Brandon558, Monday found us in pleasant weather and decent conditions. We had a shot in the morning at a small blue that exploded on the left long but never came tight. One more looker on the on the left short later in the day capped off our excitement. 3 days to go.

Although day 2 gave us flat seas and some nice rips and weed lines it also brought the meatfish. JMS-ILM joined us this day and Capt Lou did his best to keep us in the game while avoiding the ‘pests’. But no matter how hard we tried to avoid them we still ended up with a 15# ‘hoo and small mahi. A white one came knocking on the right short and long but was only kicking tires. We did get to watch a pretty nice blue chasing mahis on the surface but couldn’t get her to look our way. I will be replaying that image over in my head for a while though – simply beautiful.

Day 3 found us a little short handed, as Lou had to bow out for a few days. We were left to fend for ourselves and quickly learned that the weatherman may have been a little off on his forecast. Once we hit the warm water things got rather snotty and 8 footers were the norm with a mixture of cresting 10s and 12s mixed in for good measure. I knew it was gonna be an uncomfortable day when we had to shag grass off the pulpit railing after setting the lines out. Not much to report – one mystery knockdown and a mahi bite. After filming a few videos we decided to pack it up early and head for the barn. 2 more days left.

Thursday and Friday were lay days for us as the weather reports were less than appealing and we liked the idea of a last minute finish at the top. We had our game plan and a cooler full of kickazz baits that were sure to summons a monster form the deep. We pulled away Saturday at 0315 with JMS-ILM & Hrdcor32 along for the long ride ahead of us and headed north towards Swansboro Hole. This was to be our day! Alas, the engine gods thought otherwise and about 25 miles into the trip the starboard engine alarm went off and we all knew we were done. I pointed the Bite Me back to Wrightsville as we all dreamed of what might have been. By 0900 the boat was cleaned and I was in the car headed north back to MD.

What a week. Good times for sure and a chance to meet up with some quality members from SFC. Bite Me Lou – thank you for all of your hospitality both onshore and off. BOX, Whitey, MikeLPL, and JMS-ILM – thank you for reminding me that there is always something new to learn out on the water. Unoyankeefan – thanks for the home cooked meal and ham biscuits…DAMN GOOD. Also – good to meet Sea Biscuit, Brandon588, and Hrdcor32. I hope to fish with you all again someday soon.

Great report Paul. If you guys ever get the chance to fish with these guys, don't pass it up. You couldn't get a better pit crew than those that graced the pit off the Bite Me last week. My door is always open to you guys,(except the garage door).
Water pump threw a belt............8 bucks at the auto parts store. Don't you wish everything in life was that easy.
