    Billfish lunch...

It was the 2nd round of Acajutla and los cobanos Tournament; we won the sailfish release division.
The first place was a 32 pound roosterfish 2nd a 16 pound mahi.
Fishing was slow, for my team but we manage to release a sailfsh.
The interesting thing was to hook this small mahi with a a hole un its back any clue what may happen.
    Saludos.

Cookie cutter shark bite. I used to see fish with holes like that on occasion and thought it was bill marks. Then over at chub one year we were seeing it it lots and lots of fish. Biologist told us it was cookie cutters...

Good guess Paul, but I doubt it. All cookie cutter shark holes I have seen are rather superficial and generally symmetrical. This one is very deep. Surprised that mahi survived it. Impaled by a billfish is a lot more exciting a potential explanation, so I'll go with that!

Looks to me like it went all the way through. Which leads me to believe he shook off after being impaled and survived. I'll go with the billfish spearin. Cookie Cutter wouldnt bite opposite sides and line it up straight through?

The cookie cutter bites I've seen have been about the size of a silver dollar - could be a billfish or an errant gaff shot...

    Congrats on the Sail

Didn't see that it went all the way through... Cookie cutters can go deep but not like that... I'll switch my guess to billfish poke...

Any chance it was a foul hook that pulled a chunk of meat out?

it went all the way through, so I think it was an attack of a billfish.
Its the frst time I have seen these.
It was a lucky mahi until he decide to hit my lure

Nice lunch for JP now... Right shape wound for a bill. That marlin or sword (it seems quite flat) must have been in a heck of a school to let it go for another!
