Big Rock report
Well fishing was red hot this past week. Action seen from the 750's to the 100 line above the rock pile. A tournament record 170 fish were released and about 1/2 were blue marlin. We fished mon- wed then again on sat. Mon we were fishless only scoring on 4 gaffer mahis. We decided to hone our skills plug fishing preparing for the future. Tuesday had a shot on a pakula rat in the flat small sailfish tried to pitch a circle to him but not interested. Later in the day fishing a good bait mark along side Capt. Dave Fields (Hatterascal) we scored a small blue one on a Bart 1656 angle left long 6 min later had the leader and release. Wed saw big seas man did the weather man miss this one 6-8 in the morning and 8-10 in the afternoon with an occasional 12 thrown in. We made our way at 17 kts to the 780 line then trolled up to the 825 1 for 2 on white ones had one on right short for a few good pulls came unglued then caught one on the right long purple and black wide range nice fish around 80 lbs. Then pulled the hooks on a small blue after he hit the left long then cranked the shotgun in to him, peeled off 200 yds or so before he threw the hook. sat we fished out no billfish bites caught a few more mahis. We fished pretty much from the 780 to the 925 all week 70-500 fathoms. Finished the week 1 for 2 blue marlin 1 for 2 white ones and 0 for 1 sailfish. I guess not to bad for only having fished plugs 1 whole day before the tournament. Congrats to all who won money and to all who caught fish this past week. Also to a good friend of mine Gene Ingle, bill Trask and the crew of the Pole Position out of Wrightsville Beach, NC for going to the rescue of 3 fisherman on board a 25 pursuit who were going down about 5 miles inshore of them on monday. These guys lost pretty much an entire day of fishing to do this. Hats off guys that was top notch a few hours of fishing are not worth losing the lives of 3. To Gene and crew the karma i hope will come back to them 10 fold awesome guys just plain awesome. As of this morning the Trophy has relocated to the Morehead City Yacht Basin right across the dock from the Wild Goose she'll be there for the next 2 months look forward to seeing some of the MHC crowd in the coming weeks and weekends.
Thanks for the report John and congratulations on a good week of fishing. Did you guys play around with the spread much or pulled the same plugs every day? Care to describe it? What about speed?
I hope the rest of your tournament season continues strong!
