    BFT KNOT

    Marty or whomever.........

What is the most effective knot tied while rigging for monster yellowfin or bluefin tuna? And is there a video showing how it's tied? If not, can you put one together?

    Thanks.

if i may with out ridicule...

if speaking about trolling i would def stick with crimping..

but if you talking about live bait or chunking i am a big big fan of the polimar knot..

i think it is very strong and i personally have used it for many many years chunking tuna and have never had a problem once!

we have caught some bigger yellowfin on the polimar knot and never had it fail once!

There is one knot in my aresenal that gets the nod 98% of the time as its the strongest knot out there... A properly tied uni knot is hard to beat... On circles I learned right off these boards that snelling is the route there but to swivels or hook or even line to line I use the uni. I'm sure some place in this treasure trove of wisdom there should be a video or atleast step by steps to tie that one...

Kevin, not to worry, i saw this the other day but put it aside as I wanted to see what others said. As stated, snelling or the polimar are what I use the most but if I am on the troll, a crimp is what I use.

This time of year, with all the crap that has been going on with the board, threads like this one get missed or over looked, don't let it get to you, its not you...

I'm sure am glad the days are getting longer though...

The best knot is the one you tie alot and do well. The one tied on the line you check all the time for nicks or chafes. The one tied with the right size line for the lure, bait, or rod you are pulling with it. Lots of variables involved in whatever your target, BFT or YFT. Hard to specify one knot for an individual species, easier for a specific application. I trust a Palomar knot or a uni-knot with mono.
I would not trust a palomar with braid. Make sense?
Hopefully others will chime in more versed than myself at the BFT game.

Like Deep C said. J hooks chunking, I am also a fan of the uni or the clinch knot. Circle hooks, snell them. Trolling, crimp it! Good luck.

Thanks. I guess the good thing to do is look these knots up, look at how they're tied and then practice them. Naming them in association to species being caught is half the battle I guess....

Here you go knot. It's a start.

Edit to answer a PM regarding my comment about the palomar with braid while BFT fishing...

Assuming BFT fishing with braided line is being done via in-line swivel to leader or line to leader is the reason for my comment about the palomar with braid. Obviously a Palomar will knot attach your braid to your leader(and I sure hope you are using a leader) With a small swivel fishing for something like kings or even smaller quary(where a barrel is more likely to be used)...fine...use a palomar. On the heavier test in-lines(Spro) in a trolling application I would prefer having the braid doubled via a bimini then attached to the in-line with a catspaw or a uni.

I STRUGGLE TO TEACH KNOTS EVEN IN MY SEMINARS...

AND IT IS EQUALLY TOUGH TO TEACH THEM BY KEYBOARD .....AND THIS IS WHY THE FEW REPLIES I SUPPOSE

I HAVE SPENT 10 MINUTES LOOKING FOR MY KNOT PICTURES TO SCAN .....BUT I CAN'T FIND THEM FOR ALL THE DR PEPPER CANS LYING AROUND

PERSONALLY I CRIMP FOR BIG FISH SUCH AS BFT.....BIGGER DIAMETER LEADERS ARE HARD TO "TIGHTEN UP" .... I MEAN IT CAN BE DONE....BUT A CRIMP IMO IS JUST AS EFFECTIVE.....

IF I AM CHUNKING CIRCLES...I GO SNELLED
