BFT and Fluorocarbon..

Saw this in one of Marty posts as I was trying to see if anyone else was having trouble with fluoro leaders when bluefinning...

"HEARD REPORTS OF MANY BREAK - OFFS....MANY DOUBLES AND TRIPLES AND YET SO MANY PULLED HOOKS!!!!....SOME MEAT GAINED FREEDOM AT THE EXSPENSE OF BUSTED UP FLUORO"

Fished yesterday, had one triple and one double...lost two under the boat breakoffs...but lost two when the 300# fluroro broke clean. Only put one on the boat.

Should we be doing something different fishing the fluroro? Kept the drag just below strike (42#, fishing 200# battlewire with a top shot on 80s/130s), not trying to horse them in, but getting on the fish quick....

I'D HAVE A TALK WITH THE MATE FIRST

THE NAME OF THE GAME AT THE STERN IS FINESSE FINESE FINESE ....AT LEAST TIL YOU GET A LIP OR GILL GAFFED

MANY CREWS ARE USING 220 FLUORO AND HAVE 6 FISH GOING AIR JAPAN...

KEEP YA RIG IN GEAR.....DO NOT ALLOW HIM TO GO UNDER THE BOAT

PATIENCE AT CRUNCH TIME....COOL CALM ...COLLECTED

AND STEPPING ONTO FLUORO IN THE PIT WILL ALSO FRACTURE IT......

USE A WIND-ON 380 SPRO AND YOUR MATE WILL NOT HAVE TO WRESTLE THE FISH....A SHARP HOOK WILL ALLOW YOU TO "BE PATIENT" ON THE LEADER .....IF HE PULLS....LET HIM PULL....

BUT ALWAYS...ALWAYS KEEP A RIG IN GEAR

Good info Box,
Do you tie a knot, or crimp the floro to the spro?
Also, we had a thread a week or so ago about the spro's and concern that they might wear on the line.
Do you retie/re-crimp the spro's every trip, every few trips, ever?

Best Catch: The next bite on a jig.
You gotta lead them. If they come in upright.....pop in the top of head with the poon. If they come in on their side just reach over and pull em to the side of the boat.

a problem ive been hearing of is with the palamar knot....when you loop the loop over the hook or w/e you have to make sure it doesnt go over the main line and over the bottom part of the know otherwise it suts it clean off right where that loops was touching the main line....this happens because when you start to pull on it or have a fish on the loop wants to get tighter and it does then cuts the main line....we lost alot of tuna this summer because of that....all of them werr cut off right above the knot...oo yea and we always use fluro

And theres another way to beat him use a tuna bomb or use a garden hose
cut into 12 inches with 12 oz of lead tape to each side with the main line
thru the garden hose and make a small hole on the top of the hose and tie
a 6 lbs test line from the hose to the tip of the rod guide when the fish hits
pull the hose free it will slide down the line into the fish mouth this will do tow
things stop the chafing of the line and keep the fish from closing his mouth
if he cant close his mouth he will lose the fight quicker and like marty said
its very important to keep the boat in gear theres a few key points you should
be aware of dont put pressure on him when he moving away from you thats
a sure wat of breaking him off and dont fight him let him run and go deep that
garden hose in his mouth will stop him from getting oxygen and wont be long
before he tires and moves toward s the surface good luck

Marty (et al),

Thanks for the input!

We are using the inline Spro (mainlined crimped)...what gets me is that these were brand new rigs...I wasn't on the boat, but in reading your info I can guess the guys were trying to horse the fish to the gaff and the leader parted...

They were fishing short-handed and the capt. left the bridge to wire when they lost the fish that went under the boat.

Just when you think you've got all the bases covered....

WATER TEMP

I BET IF YOU ASKED YOUR CAPT WHAT THE WATER TEMP WAS WHEN A "STRUGGLE' WAS ENCOUNTERED....HE WILL TELL YOU 56-59 DEGREES

THE GIANTS HAVE MORE TESTOSTERONE IN THE COOL WATER...BUT ONCE THEY HIT 61 AND UP....THEY TEND TO BE MORE MELLOW....NOTICE I SAID TEND TO
