I got down to morehead late on friday night, it sucks i had missed the day fishing, caveman and lee had lost one earlier that day . But whatever i got to the boat around 9 and started riggin up for the next day. After everything was set and ready i got some sleep.
We left the dock on saturday at about 5, we headed to the same numbers Caveman had hooked up on the previos 2 days, whitch was just inside the Trawler buoy in 57degree water. The crew wasnt huge, just consisted of me, Caveman, and a guy named Chris who works for hatteras yachts. We got lines in bout 5:45 and started trolling, we were running 2 down and 1 on the rigger.
After no more than 20 minutes of fishing, it happened.
i saw the starboard planer rod bend hard, then there it was, THAT MAGICAL SOUND BABY. it started to scream. the fish made a Hard first run and took about half are spool. Me and chris managed to get the lines up and i got on the rod. As we were fighting the fish we started to have doubts it was a tuna, cuz it really wasnt fightn that hard, But then again it was on a 130, and in low gear. we fought the fish for about 30-45 mintues, towards the last ten minutes of the fight i was pretty convinced it was a BFT cuz it was staying down and every time he got a little close to the boat he would make a hard run. Finially i saw the crimp, then looked down and i could see COLOR!!
The fish put us through hell for a little bit at the back of the boat, but CAVEMAN did a good just of keepn him out of the wheels. Chris finially got it wired up and swiming long side of the boat, Just long enough for me to get a GAFF in its head, OH YEEEEA. Chris quickly followed up with a 2cnd gaff, and it was lights out!
We got the fish in the boat and put a tape on it, came out to 77 inches.
Wasnt the biggest tuna down there, but hell it busted my cherry on these BIG SOBS.
WELL THERES THE STORY, PLAY BY PLAY... as soon as i get the pics from Chris ill postem.
