Slow trolling live baits is an anglers favorite here in Bermuda. There are 2 primary baits used for this fishery; small or frigate mackeral (little tunny/false albacore/ bullet tuna) or ocean robins (red tail scad/spedos). my personal prefeance is a robin. They are much hardier than mackeral and on most days, we can catch what we need to fill the well (30-40) and then go fishing.
The basic rig here consists of 6/0 and 7/0 hooks rigged on #8 - #10 stainless wire. I prefer a straight hook up front and an offset, slightly larger hook in the back.
When the bite is on, it's common to go through a dozen or more rigs in an hour. It pay's to be well prepared with rigs close at hand and plenty of spare rigs and rigging components near by to make sure you are not caught without any baits in the water.
This is a light drag fishery (5-10lbs). On the 'Wound Up' our rods of choice are Tiagra 16's with 50 specrta backing, 40lb Suffix top shots with 23' 80lb wind on leaders. This is essentially a 50lb outfit that weighs 5lbs...Half the weight of a Tiagra 50 w/ rod.. A lot more fun to fish with and much easier to handle for novices, women and children.
Our standard spread consists of 3 rods in the water, with a spare in the rocket launcher. We fish 2 outriggers from the flybridge and a downrigger from the cockpit. You'd be hard pressed to fish a style of fishing that is more work for the mate. The 2 riggers on the bridge allow my mate time to rig others baits, put fish away, re rig... or what ever else needs to be done while I'm slacking baits back. It's a constant rotation of rods that through teamwork, results in a more managable cockpits for the mate and a lot more bites.

We use wind on leaders for a couple of reasons. Not all of are bites are Wahoo. The last Blue marlin we caught in '07 and the first of this season (a 500 lber), were caught on live robins on Tiagra 16's. Because we use the maximun leader allowed, we were able to get the release on both of these fish and let them go in great condition. The last 30' of a stand up battle with a Yellowfin Tuna is when the fight really begins. It is also when the angler is usually finished. fishing from a dead boat, when the leader comes w/in reach, I'll pinch it, taking the pressure off the angler and coax the fish into gaffing range for the mate.
Besides the lighter tackle, one of the many attractions to live bait fishing for Wahoo is the quality of the fish you catch doing it. Most days here in Bermuda, the fish caught live baiting are considerably larger than the ones caught on artificials and ballyhoo.
It is a ton more work than the 'regular' troll, but if you're willing to work as a team and want to get your anglers involved, this is an GREAT way to catch Wahoo.
