    Beautiful boat...

Don't know much about boat building...don't know Tim Winter, but I do know a beautiful boat when I see it. I had been "watching" a boat being "refurbished" for over a year now. On NC 751 between US 64 and I 40 near Jordan Lake. I often take this "shortcut" to avoid traffic when travelling west for work. Noticed this boat and was always curious as to story behind it. From the road, you couldn't tell a lot about what was going on becasue the boat was under a shelter/barn. It is at a large plant nursery and I just assumed that the owner was busy with a hobby fixing up an old clunker. But, as I drove by last Tuesday, the boat had been pulled out in the yard and the hull was finished...it was obvious that this was more than someone with a casual hobby/project. Curiosity was getting me so I stopped by on Friday afternoon to check it out. Drove up and as I got closer, I saw the big boat along with another big CC under construction...took my breath away...could see that Carolina style from 200 yards away as I drove closer. Pulled up and introduced myself to a 25 or so year old guy who was up under the boat locating the propeller shaft brackets. Turns out he is Tim Winter and what I am looking at is not somebodies hobby, but ground zero for Winter Custom Yachts. A very friendly guy let me gawk, take photos, answered all of my questions. He explained that he recognized his love for boatbuilding and went through NCSU Mechanical Engineering to help further his expertise. The big boat is a 63 foot work of art with twin Cats that he say will cruise at 38 knots...the CC is a 30 foot single engine diesels. Again, a really neat guy that was eager to share his passion. The teak on the inside and out was gorgeous! Enjoy!

I grew up in Apex and used to see his boats under construction and always wondered who he was and what he was building. Thanks for sharing. I will definitely stop by there next time I am home and get a closer look.

Those are definitely some fine pieces right there. Do you know if this is his first big sportfisher? I am interested to see if he has any that are out there running right now.

Those teak covering board are absolutely beautiful. Who ever did them has some serious talent. I also like how the contour of the baitwell flows with the shape of the boat.

I drive by every day on the way to the office and have watched the progress. I am going to miss her when she leaves for the coast.

Its a reminder to work hard and maybe one day I can afford the 30 footer.

Two great looking boats there. Will the CC be outfitted in teak as well?

Hey Folks - this boat build project is just down the road from my Chatham County abode. As stated, not a refurb but a build from the ground up. In fact, the building - complete with rails to roll it in and out was built just to start this project. The owner is Will Copeland, whose family owns (the tremendously successful) neighboring Apex Nurseries. Great bunch of folks and love to talk about the boat project. For those "not from 'round here" - the boat/nursery is about 8 miles south of the big SouthPoint Mall on I-40. Ahh don't ya love that Carolina Flair? Beautiful lines aren't they?
