Big fish Rick, congrats! That grey on your beard makes you look more like the ole salt that you are.
Hurry home now, the groupers are chewing!

Congrats on killing a slob! I hate hooking smarter tuna. Like you said, run at the boat, under, infront, stay deep, head shakes, getting its self tail wrapped...etc

Glad to hear you killed another Rick. Safe travels on the way back up. Hope big jim and the twins faired ok at the DOC. Guess being an "X" corpsman has it limitations to self diagnosis.

lunasea, i believe Rick said they had been live baiting their fish.

I'm sure he will reply in the next day or 2, I'm not sure if they had made it to Rudee It. before the blow.

Lunasea, will preface this with saying if you haven't done this up there with these guys go with some one that has. I am not saying you are a weekend warrior but inexperience, just like anywhere is costly to your fellow fisherman. We have a quota to meet here in the USA, if we don't get our wonderful politicians will gladly give it up to other countries. If you are exp. I am sorry.

To answer your question, don't leave the dock with less than 6 flats of chunk for the day. You have to have a great sounder to see the fish come through, know how to rig several different baits differently for different conditions. The preferred baits this year off Chatham were Herring out of the box, live Cod, Cod guts or Boston Mackerel. The best hook we used was a #9/0 Super Mutu, 8 1/2 hrs landed a 800 core, 760 core and a 500 core with multiple shorts. We had NO pull offs and a few chafe offs from being gut hooked.

I got a chance to learn several different styles of tuna fishing in the last 3 months, by one of the well known tuna fisherman from NE, Dave Mason of Tight Lines Tackle. This was all new to me, Kite fishing, balloon, stick rigging, and chunking. This was experience you have to pay for and I did, long days, cold nights felt like I was back in the war. The key is more time on the water the better your odds, just like anywhere.
