My memorable weekend at the “Cast and Blast” was everything I expected and more. I eagerly set out Friday to pick up my friends for an awesome weekend of fishing and hunting in the Lone Star state. It was quite a drive, but the miles seemed to melt away with the anticipation of a glorious weekend of catching fish and blasting ducks.
We arrived Friday afternoon at Bay Flats Lodge, which would accommodate our ultimate outdoor experience. The lodge was nestled on 2.1 acres of coastline. It was breathtaking with its magnificent features including an amazing great room, outdoor kitchen with a fire ring, and fabulous guest suites.
We started Friday evening with the “cast” part of our adventure. The fishing proved to be an amazing experience. We caught our limit of Reds and even a few trout to fill our box. Saturday morning brought about the “blast” part of our journey. We boarded the airboat, which was my first time, and set out to the blind to in hopes of watching ducks fall from the air. Our hopes soon came a reality as we shot 21 ducks in all. The evening brought more fishing and again a successful trip to fill our box with reds.
After an incredible day of hunting and fishing, the evening was capped off with a delectable dinner and entertaining conversation of the success of the day’s events. We savored the taste of grilled raspberry vinaigrette duck breast, corn on the cob, garlic bread and bananas foster pie for dessert; while chatting about my new knick name…the “whacker”. The “whacker” name was given to me because of my boastful attitude about whacking any ducks that came near me. All eyes were on me and that first duck did come my way. I swung hard and missed, just like a batter in a slump, hence giving me my new name.
We woke up Sunday to a new day in hopes of an even more successful day as the previous one. Our hopes were attained as the “whacker” and friends blasted 25 ducks in all, including pintail, widgeon and red heads. To finish off the weekend “Cast and Blast”, we fished for a few hours. Again, we caught our limit of reds and also added 15 trout.
This amazing weekend was one that I will remember for a lifetime. I will share my stories for years to come and hope that some day I will be able to take my son on a similar adventure and he will have as much fun and excitement as the “whacker!”
