Out of all of the tournaments in NC, this one especially, should be using the Governor's Cup 80 lb / 200 lb. rule. Isn't one of Tred's messages to the kids about conservation? I bet Tred will be using circles. He did last year.
Don't get me wrong. I love my j-hooks and until this season, I have not used them since "experimenting" with them during the 2002 season in Isla Mujeres with poor results, but rigging styles and techniques have changed since then that have increased the success rate on sails and whites. My point is that like it or not...circle hooks are better for the fish and when used properly hook up ratios do not change and there are far less pulled hooks and fish jumped off. They will require them in the future and the best that we can hope for is NC Governors Cup suggestion of 80 lb. / 200 lb exemption. The Barta tourney should show acceptance of this rule as to give us a better chance of keeping it when they do enact a circle hook rule. We have to use naked baits in this tourney so the combo issue is not in play.
This tourney is for the kids. The kids of the Boys and Girls Club and the kids fishing the tourney. The kids should be taking advantage of the fabulous billfishing in Morehead and learning to use these circles to their advantage. They WILL be required to use them in the future so why not learn now?
I will have four junior anglers on the boat and they will be hooking their billfish with circles...It's only going to make them better.
