We catch the barrel fish as by-catch when we are day time swording here in Miami. The only ones I have caught have all been in over 1300 ft. They have the whitest meat I have ever seen on any fish, but, I just couldn't bring myself to eat it after dealing with them. They have a NASTYYY layer of slime/goo. I have dealt with some nasty fish, this one takes the cake as the Ugliest, Nastiest, Slimiest creature from the depth.

When I pulled up to the dock to unload my catch at a friends boat I grabbed the aprox. 30lb fish with a meat hook to bring it over to him, when I stepped down off the back of my truck the fish swung and nailed me with a load of goo that looked like a sperm whale just had its way with me. He told me that right after I left he had 2 spanish customers who were basically in a bidding war over the meat. I think it finally went for something like $22/lb. The fact that one fish nearly covered a days gas was a solid consolation for not getting one sword bite that day.

Bait is for people that don't know how to jig.
