Bang the drum!
Had the opportunity to fish my boat in the "Black Drum World Championships" last weekend out of Cape Charles Virginia here on Va's Eastern Shore. Its a 2 day tournament that allows each boat to weigh one fish per day. Woke up Sat. am to 34 mph winds on the fishing grounds and 4 to 5 ft. deas near the mouth of the bay where the fishing is usually best. My boat is a 20 ft. Maritime Skiff and is an able little CC but 4 to 5 ft. is tough in it. The wind early limited my ability to move around to look for fish but we got lucky in the afternoon as the wind fell out as the ebb tide slacked. I had a friend from work on board that had never caught a drum of any kind so I really wanted to put him on his first. Just as the tide went slack we hooked up a nice black drum and my friend Durwood did an excellent job fighting the big fish and had it in the boat in about 20 minutes. Just in time for us to pull up and get to the weigh in. I knew the bite was going to get hot once the incoming tide started so I called over some friends who were not fishing the tourny and they were hooked up when we left and caught them the rest of the evening.
Our fish weighed in at 69.39 pounds but we finished out of the money. Fished the same spot Weds. night and caught 5 more big black drum. The drum fishing is hot here at the mouth of the bay right now. Attached is a cell phone picture of Durwood and his 1st drum.

Yeah our fish was in the top 10 but there were several in the 74 to 78 pound range that were caught. 366 anglers participated in this tourny. Durwood (the guy holding the fish) is a North Carolina boy from Greensboro I think. He was very excited & I swear I get more enjoyment out of putting someone on there 1st drum, or big striper, etc. than I get out of catching one myself anymore.
Im working tonight and then Im off until Friday. The red drum should be up here in the shallows of the bay by now. Might try to put my son on one this week. He has caught puppy drum but never a big red..

" (not until the) THE EBB TIDE SLACKED....." he said.
IT'S SO TRUE.....HOW THE TIDE IS O SO IMPORTANT WITH A BITE.....I THINK THIS HOLDS TRUE FOR ANY PART OF THE WORLD....
