Was supposed to have a charter today but we had boat trouble. Chip gave me a call when I got back to town and coaxed me into going with him, didn't take a whole lot of coaxing to get me to go to the killing grounds.
0430 out the inlet, sweet ride 25 knts till about a mile from the destination, sun just breaking the horizon. Pull back on a nice rip chuck the mess out, wasn't 5 min when the planer trips, back on the drag and it starts ripping, OH YEAH BABY. Just then the WFB comes down and the lt long, YEEEEE HAWWW! Had all 3 on for a few mins then the lt long comes unglued, a couple mins later the planer fish says good bye one left and we stick him, 25lber in the bag. pound the area for a bit and nada. Head offshore a bit and find the Yellow brick Road, Bama Lama, double header hoos again and only managed to bag one. We worked it for a good little bit getting Mohawked by the little bailers and stuck about a half doz or so in the bag. Wandered down the beach a bit dealing with those little bait steelers looking for the hoos. Saw a couple dogs airing out but couldn't get em to take. We were down to our last doz baits when we made the call to get off the grass and head back to where we started the day hoping the afternoon hoo bite would happen. We got back there and the grass had pushed up into a really nice rip. We said, what the hell maybe there is a hoo in this mess. Didn't take long and we were getting crushed by the bailers again. Chip called Shane and told him where we were, on channel 18 so everyone could hear and we sat back and watch the fleet come a calling. Shane dropped us a doz ballys on a float which we graciously thanked him by hooking his bridge pole in the motor. I WASN'T DRIVING! Thanks a bunch man. With a fresh doz we decide to make it count and get out of the Mahi. Point her up the beach. We only got about a mile from the fleet when WHAT THE HELL! Did you see that. Big fat hoo aired out on the lt short, stand by....... snap, snap, snap finally hooked him on the WFB. While cranking on him the rt short goes off, Okey Doke. I'm on the short and he comes unglued.SHIT, what the hell I'll drop it back, drop crank drop crank wait BAMM! He's there again. That's pretty cool. Well the other pulls off and we bring her to the side of the boat to meet the steel, what a fat pig. Not very long but what a girth, 45 lb piggy. Every time we went through the area we would at least get a double so it didn't take long to finish out the last doz ballys. Final score, 4 nice hoos out of 12 or so, and a doz mahi. The hoos bit first thing in the morning and started back up around 1330. Mahis all day just find em. We caught fish on a variety of colors but blue and crystal seemed to be the most consistent. 20 to 40 ftms look for the rips. Was a beautiful day on the water with some really great guys. Thanks a lot Chip.
i don't know what possessed phil to run over shanes bridge pole! glad i wasn't driving. great day to be on the water & kill something. thanks shane for the pack of hoos.
