    Any Suggestion's, Marking Braid,

Do any of you guy's mark your braid to judge the depth your planner's are fishing. When I use my down rigger's they have a line (revolution) counter on them. Now that I've made the switch to rod planer's (yes SNIPER), I'd like to keep up with the depth. When the fish are hanging around at a certain depth it sure would be nice to put it between their eye's. I saw where some one used a needle and floss, ran the needle through the braid, for a marker. Guess my concern is cutting some of the strand's and making a week spot. I'm using the cruddy green power pro at the moment. Thank's, Frank, SeaPower

What color is the braid that you are running? I noticed when fishing with Box this winter that his planer rods were marked a black mark with what could of been a black sharpie marker, but he can better answer the question of what he marked it with..........

Im going to mark mine this summer with a black sharpie for different depths just so I now exactly how deep im running. I hope it works...........

try hitching a #16 rubberband over your line after you get your mess down and fishing. keep a mental note of where the band is at all times....anywhere between the reel and the entry point of the line on the water surface. when you get a bite, the band will go right thru the guides and onto the reel as the fish is cranked in. then when you go to set your mess back out, you will have a reference point as to where your planer was fishing when you got bit. works for me......

I'm using the green power pro. I've used the rubber band method for ever, it work's. Cinch it down when I get a strike, alway's got band's in my pocket's. (If they ever find an un-identified body at sea, look in the pocket's. If you find about a pound of black rubber band's ,call my wife and tell her I won't be home for supper.) Was thinking about pre-marking the line, so when I see fish on the scope, I can put it where they live. Didn't know if a sharpie would stay. Paint sound's good too. Thanks, Frank

In all seriousness .... how are you judging the depth by the amount of line out? That would be great if you were standing still. If you have an equation that works with trolling speeds I would sure appreciate being privy to that!

the crap they make braided lines out of....spectra, kevlar, etc....is like teflon. nothing gonna stick to it for very long. the sharpie will get you by, at least it does on yellow line....might be SOL with green.

nauti, its not exactly an exact science. just make adjustments till it works.

your going to have to play with it just beacuse you have 40ft. of line out that doesnt mean your 40ft. deep you see what im saying?? but when you find out i'd just use a sharpie.

The next bite on a jig.
    Seapower,
Wahooking put up a good read about a wahoo tagging study that showed that wahoos spend most of their time with 60ft of the surface. Based on the science, I put a mark on my planer at 120' so I would have an idea of when I was fishing below their normal range.

My rule: If it aint creapin, it aint catchin. Rubber bands dont work for me.
