    Antenna Question

Folks I put this in the electronics forum, but thought it may get more views here in Box's world. Hope you don't mind Box.

I Picked up a Loran-C unit the other day. All I have is the unit and the power cables. The unit is a Furuno LC 90 Mark II. Can I buy any generic antenna and have it work or does it have to be brand specific. I would love to get this unit up and running as I have pages upon pages of TD's.

Did you get the coupler, which is a cylindrical "thing" that attaches to the base of the antenna? And yes, they do make specific antennas for LORAN.
IE8 says this may be a phishing site....Well, DUH!!!!!!... Stupid jerks can't even spell fishing right.

Look at the link below - this is a universal coupler... It may not perform as well as a furuno original, but they don't make them anymore...

Check on the Furuno website for obsolete gear - they have the manual for your unit - that should also have compatibility information for the various couplers.

You will need the coupler and a whip antenna.

If you find a used coupler be sure to check the board/chip inside the coupler. It might be shot or cracked. If you put in a new one do so with gloves and do not get fingerprints on the chip. I am not sure of the reason, but I have helped do this many times some years ago was told this by an old salt.

Thanks for the link and the info on handling the chip. I talked to the Capt. that gave me the unit and he said he didn't have the coupler anymore. That Si-tex looks sweet.

Well Folks, I guess I've been living right, because this afternoon the Charter Captain that gave me the unit called and said he found the coupler and antennea in the attic in his garage. Said he was up there getting rockfish items for the upcoming season and saw the tip of the antenna peeking around some boxes. So now I have the complete unit with the coupler and antenna, I just got to find a spot to put it. Thanks for the help guys I really appreciate it.
