Another Predator trip
The memorial Day weekend is over and my shadow has finely found me. The fishing for the most part has been very good with a very nice class of fish both Dolphin and Wahoos each day. This Friday we had the Longley Supply crowd from Wilmington and this Friday sounds like another broken record with nice class of Dolphin, Wahoo and Tunas this time. Day started out with Poseidon looking down from the clouds and giving me the thumbs up that this was going to be another good day as he showed me this double rainbow on the way to the fishing grounds.
Poseidon...
Second rainbow in the upper left hand of picture...
Picture does not show it but I have never seen this dark of purple in a rainbow...
Pulling the throttle back 3 miles short of the mark at 7:45 am, 3 line go out and left long bridge rod goes off, nice Dolphin on, 2 jumps into it and second line goes off, soon 2 Dolphin in the box, as that black and white furry things flies out of the box... Working the inshore ledge, servile more Dolphin, along with a King are in the box. With that I move to deeper water looking for the Wahoos. Is I drop off to 300' and come up on the secondary rise I mark what I thought was Tunas and I holler down that we should get bit here when the shotgun rod goes off, pass it down and soon a nice Black Fin tuna goes in the box. As were getting the shotgun back I see a nice Bull heading for the teaser and give Warren the heads up, he picks up the dink rod, and does a masterful job of picking him off as we bait and switch him...don't think were going to get that hook back... Next pass produces another nice Black Fin Tuna on the shotgun and as we head back to that area, planer rod goes off and 30+ pound Wahoo comes into the boat. A nice slow rain heads our way and I pull off of the area to let it go by when a double on the Dolphin comes up on the teaser, one looked to be over 50 pounds, giving Warren the heads up, he grabs up the flatline in his right hand and reels up the short rigger line with his left and goes to work as I finely get the teaser out of the mouth of the biggest Dolphin. Now this guy is ticked off and lights up 4 different colors, sees the orange and black Islander, raises up and raises out of the water and pounces all over it. In the mean time the other one had taken the short rigger and headed for the back 40 and the left long goes off. Hot dog, 3 on, I love a good fire drill with fish jumping over lines and passing rods over and under each other. Some along the way the big fish comes off and line goes slack, but the other 2 comes to the boat for the ride home. By now I have wound up 3 miles more to the north than I want to be and I start working back to the south where the tunas were. As I get about a mile from that spot, scattered grass has moved in and I can't find a way out, first to the inshore and then to the off shore. Finally I find the clearing and work back up to the shallows (220') and the planer is off again, another nice Wahoo...life is good. With this and the afternoon coming on us I start working back toward home to some live bottom area still looking for some Wahoo's that usually hang in that area but the Dolphin would not let us work it with out piling on the teaser for Warren to pick off with the flat line or the dink pole. Finely it was time for us to head home, lines in and riggers up, Poseidon as promised gave us light winds and slight seas for a 22Kt cruse back...life is good and every trip on the Predator is always an adventure...
Some of the fish, sorry the picture does not do this catch justice...
"I love a good fire drill" is a great line Capt Lee. Even better when the critters end up in the box. Awesome report and catch. Thanks for taking us to the deep with you all. Congratulations to you and the crew.
Predator meets Poseidon making it a bad day for Carolina pelagics. Nice report and pictures captain Lee. You have a way of appreciating a marsh red just as good as a clear water river striper or a high spot offshore wahoo, and the God given talent to find the one you are looking for.
Keep them rolling!
