Chum Nuts
Another different kind of fishing report
Well Nansea and I just got back from an 8 day trip to visit Mexico and I thought I'd share the report with the good folks here in Marty's world as you all seemed to be able to appreciate it last time.
This trip we were going to be going to two different places, the first of which was right around Puerto Vallarta and was to be spent with Nansea's family, followed by 4 days back in El Careyes with the friends that we met in December (A different kind of fishing report)
Puerto Vallarta:
As some of you may know Nansea's family still lives in Mexico so this part of the trip was significant for a couple of reasons- first, it would be the first time that they were all together in about two years, and second, it would be the first time that I met her father
. While a little apprehensive about meeting him for the first time, I figured that a fishing trip might break the ice.
We left at first light and headed straight to Corbatena rock and Captain Lora quickly made some bait.
Here is Nansy's father, Enrique tripled up...he had never caught anything bigger than tilapia, so you can see how different it was for him

They were then bridled up and sent back out.

We slow trolled our way around the rock with little success for the morning, jumping off two sailfish (these baits were way to big for them to inhale, but it was good to hear the drag scream). Right before we picked up to leave we did have a nice run off. I looked to Enrique to take the rod but he was feeling a little green- he had never been out of sight of land before and it was giving him some vertigo so I took the rod.

A short time later and we had a nice little yellow belly join us for the run home

With a tuna in the bag and a sick father in law that I was trying to make good with, we decided to head in for some inshore rooster fishing.
We tried a couple of spots around Punta de Mita before heading a bit North, and Lora put us right on the spot. I had a rooster chasing my popper in no time, but they wouldn't commit so I changed out to a Baby Runboh and was quickly on with a nice fish.

After releasing him, one of the live bait rods went off and this time I convinced Enrique to jump on the rod. I later found out that this trip was the first time he had ever used a rod, so he was really nervous. Still, nerves and all he did a great job and before long our second rooster was a caught fish.

We caught a bunch more roosters, some jacks, and a nice dorado and called it a day. Here are some of the pics:

Getting back to the hotel, I also learned that Nansy's mother and father had never had fresh tuna before....so I prepared some sashimi to end the day.

Another great day for the memory books.
El Careyes:
After visiting with Nansea's family in Puerto Vallarta, we headed a few hours south to relax and meet up with our old friends in El Careyes. This time I was carrying with me two rods that I built for Javier and Angel as well as new baitrunner reels and a bunch of fishing gear, some of which CaptKev donated (thanks again Kev, they loved it!). They were both shocked with the gear and said that they wished they could do something to repay me..."Catch some fish with it and we're even" I replied and they promised me that they would

The next morning I decided to get up and try my hand at the fishing off of the rocks. Last time I was in El Careyes I used a small bucktail and caught a bunch of fish, though they were all small. I decided to change up my tactics and this time brought down some white shrimp sabiki rigs and a live bait balloon set up. I made bait in the form of a small snapper and put him out. He was out for no more than 10 minutes before the balloon got torn under the surface and the line was screaming. After maneuvering around the multiple rocks and ledges I was rewarded with this beautiful Pargo. I believe that it is a Greenbar Snapper. The all tackle record in Mexico is 21lbs 2oz...I don't know how close this was to that, but it had to be in the range.

Well into the kitchen he went, and at lunch time out came some ceviche

Some grilled fillets with Achiote sauce

And we washed them both down with some nice cold libations

On the last day that we were there, I chartered a panga out of Tenacatita to try to get Angel and Javier on some fish with their new rods. Also along for the ride was Daniel, another fisherman friend from Careyes.
Javier (on the left) and Angel (on the right) with their new gear

And here is Daniel- the other guys were picking on him in good fun all day as he was now using Angel's "old cana" (fishing rod, pronounced 'kanya').

We headed out to some offshore rocks and found a blitz of jack crevalle (fureles in spanish) and the guys were rewarded with nonstop action on their bucktails. I sat back and just watched. I had more fun just sitting back and listening to them talk in rapid fire spanish as they were hooking up on every cast. It was another memory for the books. Here are some pics of the day.

Fishing the blitz

Daniel with his shirt...funny story, in broken english he asked me why everyone laughed when they read it- he understood all of the words except for "pimps". I explained it as best I could and told him that is was a great shirt and he should wear it more.

Angel is all smiles after the blitz

Another trip to El Careyes and another set of fine memories made. Speaking of fine memories, I should also mention that for the entire week that we were there, there was a model shoot going on...most of the time they were pool side, relaxing in their, well, you get the idea

I hope you are all well, and thanks for reading this thread.
Best,
Shoe

Living up to the original A different kind of fishing report is hard to do, but you once again managed Danny. Wonderful chapter in this story of friendship.
The green bar pargo is one fine looking animal, I can only imagine the excitement of that strike and fight off the rocks! Very cool!
Wise decision to bond with your father in law over fishing. Wiser yet to go with Lora. He is very fishy.
Did not notice the "pimp" shirt on the group photo, but Daniel's portrait with cold beer in hand and your related caption got a good belly laugh out of me.
Thanks for this wonderful Sunday entertainment!
