Another AWESOME Trip
After our last fishing trip in June, how could we not come back for Wahoo in October? We made plans with Box for three days of offshore action on the RUN OFF. We asked several friends and family members to join us. We wanted to share this experience with others. Lucky for us, my bro Stan was able to join us for this fishing adventure.
Day One: On the boat at 4:15am, (it was a long day). Two hours later there were 7 lines in the spread. Sea witches and ballyhoo on piano wire -- how could they resist? It didn't take long, maybe 20 minutes, and we're on our first fish. - SAILFISH - It was Stan's first time offshore and me, being the generous guy I am, I tell him "GET SOME OF THAT ACTION!!" It was nothing but smiles and crankin'. Wasn't long before Box had the leader and Stan had his first BillFish.
Biker Babe is up next and puts a nice Black Fin tuna in the box. I get the next Black Fin, it goes in the box. Stan and I both lose small tuna at the boat. Biker Babe is not feeling well at this point and is laying down inside. We figure out later that the patch she is wearing is messing her up. One hour after removing the patch, she's feeling much better.
I think the Baracuda hits next, it goes in the box (shark bait for the boys back at the dock). Then the Wahoo decide it's time to start chewin'. We hook seven and put three in the box. Stan gets credit for landing the Big Slob 57"long, 24"girth & 56.5lbs -- that's a citation. I got a nice one, 50"long & 36.5lbs, and number 3 was 40" & 25lbs. By this time, Biker Babe is ready for some action again. She gets on a BIG FOUL HOOKED WAHOO. It pulls off just as Box is ready to sink the meat hook. Man, we all wish that one would have come on the boat, it looked very large.
After that, things slow down a bit. Then Stan gets a nice King Mackerel 40"long & 25lbs. and a small mahi. Box tells us we have a BABY GRAND MEAT SLAM! Black Fin Tuna, Wahoo, King Mackerel, and a Mahi. We're all happy. Back at the dock it weighs out at 165lbs, cleaned and bagged 100lbs of meat for the box. What a great day!
Day Two: We woke up at 7:30am, the wind was blowin' 20 knots with 8' to 10' seas, No fishing today. So we spent several hours doing a final clean, rinse, and vacuum bagging the Wahoo, Tuna, and Mackerel. Later we went down to the waterfront to see Mark Ray at his new shop. Unfortunately, the sign on the door said "GONE FISHING". Sorry we missed you, Mark. We left our nose prints on your window. Nice shop. Went down to the boat and talked to Box and Beast for awhile and up walks the Merry Marlin crew. After they left, we're told that those boy's are "Certified Fish Killin' Machines" (that's something I'd like to have on my resume) Cool to meet members of SFC W2MW. Saturday night's entertainment was the Spook House and total darkness maze in Newport. Haven't done that in years! Thanks Brian and Donna. That was FUN!
Day Three: Beautiful morning, clear and calm. Show up at 6:00am and the boat is not running. WTF over! Brain tells us by 10:00am it's going to be very nasty (20-25 knot winds and 8-10 foot seas) and we don't want to be 50 miles offshore when it hits. We're not Hard Core and don't need a beating while on vacation. Sure enough, by 10:00 it's completely overcast and the wind starts blowin'. Glad these guy's have a plan B: inshore fishing on the Contender. From 10:00 to 5:00 we're catching all kinds of fish--some we've never seen before. Needle, Flounder, Lizard, Pin, Red and Black Drum, Speckle Trout, and Sting Ray! Plus, Brian netted a bunch of shrimp for bait (hadn't seen that before). We also saw a pod of porpoises on the way back. What a Fun day, beautiful area in the "Ditch", and da Beast was in the zone. Amazing watching this man do his thing. By the end of the day, I was glad we didn't go offshore so we could have this experience. I can't begin to remember how many fish we caught but the cooler was full.
Once again, we had a wonderful time in MHC, NC. It was great to see everyone and we really appreciate the great hospitality and the awesome fishing. Thanks again for another memorable vacation.
Great report with the pictures Todd. Congrats to you your wife and brother for all the offshore and inshore fish. Glad you all had a nice fall vacation, sounds like you were taken care of very well.
That sure was a well deserved Downeast slam both offshore and inshore coming all the way from the AZ Desert...
Some of those pictures show some pretty rough seas but the Black Boat sure will bring you onto some nice fish... Lots of regular NC fishermen are still looking for that first wahoo over 50 lbs.
Good to meet you guys too @ the docks as The Beast sharpened hooks and Box coached some kids on the Balyhoo Dance!

Jacques,
My bro Stan is back in San Antonino and I think he's starting to realize what happened to him after talking to friends that fish along the Texas coast. They are amazed that he took a Sailfish, two Wahoo, King Mackerel, Mahi, and a cuda all in one day on his first offshore trip. Guess we better get the photos and video out to him to quite down the natives. Hopefully it sends more business NC way.
We're two for two on excellent fishing trips with the Run Off boys, can't imagine fishing anywhere else these days.
For me, it's all about the "Thrill of the Kill". Man, that Wahoo is TASTY stuff.
