    AMERICAN DINER--- Extinct

What ever happended to the All American Diner?
I work in a downtown financial district and every single lunch spot has fallen into the Fu Fu menu crap. I recon, that by adding some sorry ass herb to mayo or using some misfit looking (and named bread) they have figured out they can charge three times as much for something that used to be good ole lunch food.
Case in point: I just went out and got the weekly "special" from the Fu FU lunch joint in the attrium of my building. I paid $7.25 for a BLT. Now it wasn't called a BLT--- it had some Frenchy sounding name. Here is what I got for $7.97 (includes tax)----
2 strips of bacon (wasn't even called bacon),

one little leaf of something I think they thought was lettuce--- looked and tasted more like a Sweet Gum leaf to me,

two slices of the ugliest damn tomatoe you ever saw,

the nastiest mayo you will ever eat--- had a bunch of some kind of herb in it,

and to really ruin my lunch---
not even real bread--- something called foccallia or something.

Why can't we have a Blue Plate Special anymore?--- what's wrong with Meat loaf, mashed potatoes and Green beans?---- What ever happened to country fried steak and Turnip Greens for lunch? Would it absolutly kill the Fu Fu's of the world to have a lunch special of Sallsbury Steak ?---- no romilades, or infused impregnated sauces to smother it in----- just catsup, salt & pepper.

I recon it's another afternoon of peanuts dropped in my Pepsi to hold me over till supper.

My next vent: Why is it now politically incorrect to serve French's Yellow mustard----- the shit they do to mustard these days is a crime

If this is something you seek, then perhaps you need to make the journey to NJ.

White Manna in NJ comes to mind. You want a burger like no other?

Look no farther. Believe me, i am right there with ya. Give me 4 oz. of beef slapped on a bun with some good ole cheese and fries!

glenn, well there are still a few around. on the way to the outer banks from virginia there is one just before you cross the wright brothers bridge. it is called mel's diner. great food and very nostalgic inside. also went to the mssa swap meet in march in annapolis and we ate a diner there too. can't remember the name right now but people came from miles around to eat there. best way to find them is to travel with your wife. mine always picks out those "cute quaint places" to eat.

I hear you Glenn. There's a nice little restraint no the water front called "Fish House Grill". Just good home cooking for the most part. You could get a good meal for about 5 to 7 bucks. New owner took over and "up scaled". Food is still good but a Hamburger starts @ 8 bucks and no kids menu.
Big Jay, how old is that picture...gas was $1.53...it made me cry.

Actually i do recall one such diner. You are right for the most part.

It wasn't in a major metropolitan area but a very a snooty upscale area. I remember my GF at the time had to take some standardized test for a nursing profession or something similar.

I stopped for a cup of coffee in a small old fashioned box-car diner. Very cool to see something so quaint and vintage in such a busy formal area.

I really liked ELS burgers in MHC.
