Albies WB

Went out Masonboro today and caught around ten in about 1.5 hours casting Maria jigs.... not far from the Liberty ship. Left them biting as the swell got into my brother in laws head. They pull a little harder than a speck!

They sure do pull hard! Good work on your fish George.
What time of the day was it? Were the fish showing? I went by that area around 4 today but never saw any surface activity.

Biscuit,
We went out around 2 pm as the tide was starting to come back in. There weren't a ton of fish, but a lot of little pods scattered around. We just followed the birds. Some groups of birds had fish showing and others didn't. We eventually found a group of fish that stayed in one area. We had our best luck when we were marking lots of bait down deep and that seemed to hold the fish. First time I've targeted them down here, it was nice not having to compete with a thousand boats like off Harkers some days.

Hows the crowd down around Harkers these days? I fished them for a few years. I fished out of Harkers and the crowds really took off after the fishery got publicized in the magazines. The first 3 years were great with maybe 15 boats out there on a week day. Once the articles came out, it boomed to 150 and they were stepping on every breaking school they could find. It was like whack-a-mole out there. As soon as they popped up, the yahoos were driving them back down.

Quite frustrating.

The last time I fished for them up at Cape Lookout was about 6 years ago. Fishing was very slow but we lucked up and found a small pod of bait about 2 miles off the beach that used our boat for shelter. We were hooked up constantly by ourselves for about 30 minutes. Some boats that were 1/2 mile away saw us catching fish and headed our way. Within 2 minutes of them seeing us we were surrounded by 8 boats that piled up on us at full speed. I couldn't even cast my fly rod because I couldn't make a back cast or forward cast since the boats were so close. Not surprisingly the fish sounded. I haven't fished for them up there since then.

It is not like that now, maybe a dozen boats on most days, kinda like the old days from 13 years ago. Hard to belive that I have been doing this fishery for 13 years now.

What colors were working for you? I was throwing at them a few days back just outside/inside the inlet. I managed to hook up on one but bust my line on it;s second pull out. Had drag set and popped my 23 lb mono leader. It was a fiesty one!!! Puller harder than the king a hooked up later!!

Pink maria was the only thing I was throwing. I think its more about the size of the lure than the color, but I could be wrong.
