5:30 the alarm starts buzzing an we are off for another Saturday morning kingi mission with new flatmate Sam and Mr Puss. I had high hopes of filling the livebait tank then teasing kings onto the baits with our home made spreader bars. One slight problem........ not a single Mackeral in the berly trailDead plenty of kings came up behind a micro snapper but they were all tiny rats and would have been a bit of fun on plastics gear
Oh dear....Confused
its not that easy to go livebaiting without any livebaitsLOL
We finally found some Kahawai willing to play ball about the same time the Omaha Bay Sou Wester kicked in and made things a wee bit bumpy, still we carried on to the reef and set the gear. one free swimming under a balloon on 6kg and one bait bridled down deep on 24kg and it didnt take long for the first nudge...... sam picked up the rod two whacks and nothing, upon retreival we found our kahawai had become lunch for something big with teeth. We set the gear again and this time the surface bait got wacked. Big swirls around the Balloon then nothing once again, it seems that these sharks were arse bandits the way they wanted the back end of the baits.
One more time for the same result it was off to find some snapper............ well after one measley gunard we figured kingi fishing was were its at so we headed back to the reef afterpicking up some more suitable kahawai livies.
this time the reef was alive
our first bait once again got sharked but this time the fish continued on and after a few seconds of waiting we came tight to a very large bit of gear! As soon as the fish felt the hook it was off and almost instantly the line angle came up and the beast jumped. Beautiful Bronze colour and it displaced a serious amount of water....It was a Big *****LOL 5 mins later she showed herself to us, this time in a series of marlin-esque greyhounding jumps. Oh to be sitting on the roof with a video camera.
Settled into the fight and it was great practice for game season driving around on the fish and sam did a great job as wheel man and after about 25 mins we managed to get the big girl to the boat and a big girl she was, easy 120k but the consensus was closer to 150kg. She was hooked in the Anal fin and actually released herself with a quick kick of the tail when she felt the ***** of the tag pole.
**** that was fun lets do it again!!!!
back to the reef and things had started to happen, huge schools of everything had come to the surface as the current had slowed, Parore and kahawai were boiling all over and after a few more encounters with our big bronze girls we noticed some splashing and sure enough it was the sight we have come to love. Kingfish going hard on groups of bait. Kahawai flying into the air and the Kings turning the water around them into a turbulent mess of white water. We adopted a bit of a run and gun approach with these fish but we just couldn't get close enough to present them with a nice juicy popperWink
Bugger it lets try a jig, first retrieve I could see the lumo jig heading for the surface with a heap of shapes behind it and right at the surface a wee king grabbed the jig..... another 3 winds and he was in my caring arms ready for release. the second drop saw some much better size kingis follow up the jigs but no takers...... third drop and whammo and we were into a fish, not a big one but a legal fish none the less. I took a quick photo and slid the fish into his ice bath for sashimi.
A cruisy drive back into omaha bay and watch a bit of muppetry at the ramp that omaha is always good for.
How can a land rover defender drive across deserts and through jungles but struggle to retrieve a 6m boat from one of the better ramps in the auckland area LOL LOL LOL
Might head back out soon
sorry no pics of the bronzy unless the puss got some of it boatside
