After The Storm...

Well had the boys scheduled for yesterday in the wind and blow and when Mark called and ask me if I could move them to today, I said sure but don't expect much as we are going to get a lot of rain and the water will be chocolate milk. The boys were determined and wanted to go anyway and after a late night of well you get the idea...a meeting of 0700 turned into 0730 and a late breakfast while I readied the boat.

With the wind still blowing 15 to 20, Mullet's were no where to be found on the high tide so I went to plan B for bait and pulled into a boat basin looking for Menhaden. Seeing a tiny little bit of nervous water, I move the boat to the bulkhead and see a single flash and let the 10' net fly into the wind and it looks short, let it sink but see no signs of life till I pull the purse strings tight and the net comes alive with way more 2 to 4 inch baits than the 30 gallon live well could hold. Filling the well to overflow and dumping the rest, we had way more that we could use for the day, we head north to our first stop.
I ease the boat to the far back of the creek to my first little hole and before the fourth line hits the water, were hooked up with a nice keeper flounder...humm, maybe today won't be so bad after all...

Have you ever noticed how big boys can make nice fish look very small in how they hold them...such was that today...

A few more missed fished later, it was time to move down the bank in search of more fish and the elusive Red Drum that I was looking for them to catch. In the next spot again we miss a few and the ole "Flounder Pounder" finds another nice keeper. As the tide was dropping fast, I kept working the boat out of the creek looking for fish but we could not find any love, so it was time to move on.
As we run down the ICW I slow and pull into another spot and tell the guys that I don't know what makes this spot so good but it holds fish most of the time. We set the anchor, 2 baits get tossed out and as I am getting 2 more ready I here the gurrrrrrr rrrrr of the reel as a nice Red Drum takes Mark for a ride around the boat and from the hoops and hollows of the guys you would thought I had a bunch of 10 year olds on the boat...hand on now, I did have a bunch of kids on the boat today...big kids...

After a while it was time to move on as the action slowed and the "Tailor Blues" moved in so off we go heading back to toward the house. We pull into the next falling tide spot, set up on a great la'zzard fish bite... and finely found this little guy but it was still a keeper...

Can you believe this big guy had never held a fish before, now don't think he did not get a ribbing about it...but with a little of Capt. Doctor Lee's therapy, he finely decided to hold the fish. I was a Kodak moment...nothing like holding your first fish ( like a girl)...

Now it was time for a short move. By now the tide was on the flood and we were running out of time and even though this is a ebbing tide spot, I decided we did not have time to make another run in the boat so I opted to just keep working down the bank and landing in the mouth of a small creek we started getting a nibble but the birds were so bad that we could hardly get a live bait in the water before a bird picked it up but we did end the day with another Red Drum...

Last fish of the day before I had to have them to the dock the be back in Raleigh by 5...

Had a great time with the guys today and it was great to on the water after the blow...Mark, great to fish with you again...
