I agree with the majority here in saying it sounds like AJ's. The African Pompanos put up a good fight but nothing like an AJ. When we catch AP's we are using a king rig with 43lbwire and a 3/0 live bait hook and a 4x treble stinger with a pogie and 20 lb test line. They are one of the best eating fish I have ever had.

If we happen to loose two jigs it's time for the "Buffalo gun". 50 Penn Inter reel with 80lbs. Put a big live bait on a big circle hook. If your drag is set right and your line in good condition you'll stop any fish in our waters...
You will most likely see a nice AJ or in deeper water a heck of an almaco... I believe the pompano will abandon more quickly that the AJ's and is less likely to rub against the wreck...
