    80w Tiagra

As one of the people posting threads regarding planers, i was looking into an 80w Tiagra reel and noticed that per Shimanos specs that a 50W has the same drag as an 80. Is this a typo or is there away to make a factory 80 have more drag. Someone posted and mentioned that you want an 80 on a planer rod because it has 52lbs of drag. How is that acquired?

When the spool is not completely filled there is a smaller distance between the point where the line comes off of the spool and the axis the spool spins on, by reducing this distance compared to a full spool you end up with a larger force required to pull line off of the spool. The drag a reel produces should actually be measured in torque,

torque=force of fishing line x distance from axle
if the torque of the reel remains constant and the distance decreases, then the force must increase.

If you do a search of older threads on the forum you will be surprised how much discussion there has been on the matter.
One of the major reasons you need an 80 as opposed to getting by with a 50 is that the spool of the 80 does a better job of freespooling line without backlashing, this is very important when tripping the planer. (An old salty planer can be tripped by by freespooling for 5 seconds or so, making it much easier to retrieve the rig, otherwise you would have to crank in the set planar which pulls at 50 or so pounds).
    Hope this helps.

If you don't want to use an TI80W, you can get away with a Penn 70vs. The 70 can get over 60 lb.s of drag, and it is less money! But the Tiagra 80 will hold up longer with less trouble in the long run. It is hard to beat the Shimano TI80W.
