8-15-09 MHC - Sometimes it works out for the best...
We headed out this morning looking for hoos and maybe a sail... We had a target area in mind in about 40 Fa - but as we neared the area, there was a storm with a bit of lightning right where we wanted to be... We decided to pull back the sticks and set out our gear - hoping the storm would break up...
Thankfully it took its time breaking up - so we trolled around from 25 - 35 fathoms for a little more than an hour - and picked up our 4 wahoo limit (just 2 of us today). I don't know why, but all of our hoos came from above - very cool to watch a hoo go airborne and a reel scream.
Already a nice day, but the storm had broken up, so we pointed it deep...
as we worked out past 100 fa, we picked up a small mahi but the area is looking great - and up came a sail - first billfish release for us this year. Its 10:00am and we're pretty happy with the day - but off in the distance there are a bunch of birds working and a characteristic frenzy - Tuna...
Not YFTs this time but nice sized skipjacks - add 4 of those to the box and we decide to put out some plastic... and a few minutes later a white piles onto a small bart 1656 - it jumps a few times and is off - fun while it lasted...
Had a few small mahi maul our baits, but I counted at least 15 free jumping billfish over the next couple of hours - usually just out of our range
But it was a beautiful day on the water and a bunch of fun...
Great day Fred. The hoos are here. Walked the dock yesterday and saw lots of them, everyone had their share. Cameron on the Impulse went 8 for 21 on Sails.
