Capt. Ken Swindell didn't think he was bringing up that big of a swordfish on his electric reel Saturday morning.
Then he and commercial swordfisherman Cliff Hughes got a look at the fish.
"We thought it was a little tiny one, because it wasn't really fighting until we got it to the boat," Swindell said. "He was as long as the boat was."
Swindell, of Sunrise, and Hughes, of Pompano Beach, didn't weigh the swordfish, but its core – the fish without its head, tail and innards – weighed 500 pounds. The formula for a swordfish's live weight is to add 30 percent of the core weight, which made the fish 650 pounds.
The men were fishing on Crystal Oceans, Hughes' 23-foot center console. They had hooked the swordfish 15 minutes after they dropped a squid to the bottom in 1,800 feet 10 miles south of Port Everglades. It took Swindell 30 minutes to get the fish to the boat and when he saw the fish, he was speechless.
"We caught one like 250 pounds two days before," Swindell said. "Cliff said, 'Well, is he bigger than the one the other day?' He looked over the side and he about puked."
The swordfish then ran off 400-500 yards of line and Swindell and Hughes, who was driving, needed another two hours to get the fish back to the boat.
Swindell and Hughes called over Reely Tight, which was fishing nearby, for help. One of its mates got in Crystal Oceans and helped the duo get the fish in the boat. Hughes and Swindell then headed straight to a Pompano Beach fish house, where they needed a forklift to get the fish out of the boat.
