    6/26 1600 fathoms

We ran 120 plus miles yesterday to 1600 fathoms of the Baltimore looking for our first billfish of the year and found the western edge of the stream. The water looked great with a hard 77-80 degree break but it had no life, bait, weed or fish in it. Total for the day was 4 gaffers out of 6 bites and that was it we never saw a billfish.

At least you got out there and gave it a shot and got some fresh mahi for the table.

We ran to the Hudson on Fri night thinking that we may run all the way to the warm water on the 1000 fathom line looking for the same thing as you. When we got to the canyon I asked around if anyone had made the trip east to that water and I got a couple of answers that they had and there wasn't any life in it and that there was some action at the 100 sq. With that being said we stayed in the 68-70 deg water looking for some eyeballs or YFT. To our suprise we got mauled by a 300-400 pound blue marlin. We got to fight her for about 45 seconds before she came unbuttoned.

I won't say what she came up and ate, as I know Marty wouldn't be happy to see we even had it in our spread

Man that's a long way to go, which begs a question in my mind. Which is more important, water temp or bottom contour? I've chased water a long way off too with no results only to find the bite somewhere more inshore. I've decided to stick with a few places that have consistantly produced for me and usually that hasn't had anything to do with water temp.

When we are fishing that deep we are looking more at the water conditions then structure. That was the closest spot that we thought we would have a legit chance at multiple billfish shots but it didn't pan out. A friend of mine fished the same water last week on his way up from NC and caught a nice blue and missed a few whites so we were pretty confident we would find something but it just wasn't meant to be. We were originaly planning on fishing the Poormans or Baltimore but based on the reports we got the day before of almost no fish we decided to take a gamble and burn some extra fuel.

Sounds like the Big Rock water followed you back up the road.

I have fished the Baltimore anywhere between 60 and 500 fathoms. Ive been 1 for 2 the last two days fishing. it seemed like everybody has had a shot at at-least 1 billfish a day and ive heard of heard up to 4 shots a day tuna fishing.
