    6/12 MHC: A Father's Day Present

A friend from church wanted to take his father out fishing as a Father's Day present. I was happy to oblige and so was the weather so we went on Saturday. His dad said he wanted to catch "a big fat pinkie". His son wanted to catch an amberjack.

Started trolling a couple of miles offshore of the 14. Had a decent gaffer within a couple of minutes. Trolled for a while with no hits and had a peanut shy of the 90. Trolled towards Lookout Hump and Kingfish Valley with only one small mahi. They suggested bottom fishing at this point.

So we went to some live bottom that I know about. Started off with a small sand bass. Then the dad caught something big. When it got to the surface it was exactly what he wanted - a big, fat vermillion snapper! Happy Father's Day.

Last drop of the day and his son caught an amberjack - just like he wanted!

Called it a day around 1PM.

I think we made the same mistake with the mahi that a lot of other boats were making - we were fishing in water that was just too warm. There were plenty of flying fish inshore of the 14.

We trolled a couple of Black Barts and an 8" Blue/White Ilander with a 5" pork rind. Biggest mahi of the day came on that. The big bottom fish came on cut bait.

Radio reports were mixed - lots of skunks but some people doing good. Most people reported plenty of bailers. Some gaffers were reported.

No video - I only believe in embarassing myself, not my crew!

Pretty work Brother! Way to put 'em on the fish.

I might be wrong, but I think that might be an Almaco Jack.

    Thanks for the report!

Trust me WAHOONBOX, from what I saw at those locations (from a nautical chart I bought three years ago), you aren't missing much.

Nauti - I have a really bad habit of misidentifying fish - so you are probably right. I will get all these species figured out by the time I retire.
