5.9.09 - Del Bay Black Drum (Pics)

Left the dock at 6am, on the grounds by 7am.

Slow bite all day, a fleet of 150 + boats fishing a very small lump, we decided to stick to our plan and head to our numbers about 2 miles from the fleet.

boated two fish, 24# & 25#, missed a couple more. The big boomers will be in soon, this was just the start!

fish caught on whole fresh surf clam
circle hooks, rods locked up in the holders
    12-18' of wate
one fish on the incoming one on the outgoing

so far it has been spotty, with mostly smaller fish, a couple guys picking fish over 50 but not many. . .

we will know by the next moon if its going to live up to last years expectations,

the full moon in late may/early june is always the best for fish between 50-100#.

    I will turn on shortly

FAr too much rain water late last week plus the full moon brought all that crappy water out towards the mouth of bay where most of us fish for drum. I know it will be red hot on the next new moon over Memorial Weekend and the again flat out awesome on the full moon June 7th. Watch for those big females to show up within a week or two as they these small ones are almost all males. I promote almost all catch and release on the big spawners on our boat these days.

Do these behemoths typically populate the reef sites in the lower bay? How far North do they migrate? I thought that night time was the most productive but these pictures prove otherwise. Any information on catching these is much appreciated as it is a fishery that is close to me but that I have never taken advantage of. What about table fair? I hear all kinds of stories about how they are to eat.
