My question to you both is this...were the anglers pumping the rod with a fair amount of line out and 2 were you keeping the boat in gear (not in and out of gear) with forward momentum of the boat at all times during the fight?
I know that it is in my opinion (for what its worth) when a fish is way out behind the boat pumping the rod will loose a lot of fish, especially when you are using braid with top shots...why, slack, and it does not take much to let the hook cone loose. Rod pumping at best needs to be used when the fish is straight up and down.
The other question is were you using mono. If you were remember the line stretch video we did where we had 24" of stretch in 25' of line, which in a 100' of line = 8' (96") . The reason I bring this up is did you get a good hook set to begin with. With mono I will set the drags a little higher than I will with braid.
A lot of guys see anglers doing it on TV and really don't understand when the people are doing it, (pumping the rod) why, or the reason behind it, but if you will look closely the anglers most of the time (that know what they are doing) are pumping the rod when the fish is straight up and down.
Anyway I hope this helps you guys out and maybe I'm wrong with what I am reading into this. Just my 2 cents and some "food for though". Hope it helps. Capt. Lee
