Well I fished the Jolly Mon tournament last weekend. So we made our choice to fish Sunday, we had a game plan and on Saturday we went hunting bait. We went to my favorite hole to find bait when no one else can. Sounded as if bait was hard to find Saturday morning but we eased out about later since we were fishing Sunday. Went over to where I ALWAYS find bait and within 10 minutes there they were. We threw the net and loaded up. Decided to take them back and pen them up. We I was a little concerned because I was sitting in 79 degree water. We head back in and get to the marine and almost 98% DEAD water temp was 82.5 back in the ICW and lots of fresh water, well that was a waste of time. LOL Sunday get up start looking at 530am not a bait to be found finally 930 get a bait found call we head south and load up. Fished south as we had planned. Fished all day picked at the teenager kings all day, had one maybe 18lbs, numberous sharks and 1 NICE cuda. Oh well nothing to win money on so we call it a day and head in to a BLOWING head wind about 25+ lets just say it was sporty ride back in. Come home immediately start cleaning boat for a turn around FUN trip with my uncle and his brother in law. Work 2 days leave out Wed am at 5am.
I arrive at the New River boat landing and we go looking for bait after we stop at New River Marina and pick up a box of cigar minnows (just say at this time it was for a just in case but later we will be GLAD).
We find bait as usual spots, 1 throw and go floated the net, now it is slick so I put them on the dash we head out about 12-15 mile area. I put out my live baits and mix in some dead cigars just to see what they are looking for. Well about 45 minutes into it she hits DEAD CIGAR on the downrigger zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz-----zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz--zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz---zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz CLEAR LINES she is headed offshore, lets go get her, I tell Marty who is on the rod u just let me know where the line is, she is still rolling not slowed YET. We get downriggers up all line clear I am on the wheel I work him to the front both of them are new to king fishing other than a trip or 2 before. We chase her down, now here she comes I change directions to keep line tight, he is working her and listenging to me, I have gaff right beside me, still no sign, water is clear but no sight, first site Marty say I think it is a shark, I said it did not act like a shark. Now I see the beautiful silver flash, no Marty that is a nice king, we fight her little longer he is now on the bow on port side, I give my uncle the wheel ask him to listen closely to me, she is just out of my reach, WHERE IS MY 12 ft gaff when I need it DA$%!! Ok she circles on more time, 1 shot GOT HER, go to lift whoooaaa wait little heavier than I thought LOL, lay her on the deck, first words out of my mouth were WHERE THE HE$$ were U LAST SUNDAY!!!!!!!!! Definate money fish, everyone catches their breath I say I did mark that lets go get some more.I have them working cleaning getting her in fish bag and ice her down so we can have fresh fish for dinner. We pick up a cpl teenagers all on dead cigars, then go back out yesterday pick at them some more all on live bait on top, this time we add a cpl of mahi (10-12lbers)to the bag and kings including a decent 22lber. Well 2 days of taking my uncle on a fishing trip I have owed him for a year now. I had to cancel on him last year several times because of fishing so many tournaments and this year I decided after the National Championships in Biloxi, more fun fishing was in store for me, friends and family. Here are a cpl of shots with Marty with his 30+lber, we put her on the digital scales and she was around 32 but she was NICE one. It was his biggest king and just made my week since Sunday was so slow.

Nice Fish Scott. Now where is this super secret bait spot? We opted out of the Jolly mon one year and just fun fished. That year they had other catagories for Cobia and Mahi. We saw the winning fish caught near us. If we had fished the tournament we would have had a 3rd place king, first place cobia and a 4th place mahi. With 2 of us we limited out on the kings had had 10 gaffer mahi. Our friend who fished the tourny got skunked.
