2008 Circle Hook Results

Comming into the 2008 season many people had doubts about using circle hooks for billfish and were not sure how good there results would be for the season. Well the season is comming to an end and our results so far are 13-27 on whites and 1 for 1 on blues with the circle hooks. Im not very happy that we didn't catch over 50 percent of our bites this year but our ratio has been improving every trip so hopefully next year we can improve on our catch ratio. What was everyone elses results and was your catch ratio better or worse then the seasons you fished with j-hooks?

I didn't start this thread to call you guys out. I missed my share of fish this year to. I just wanted to see what other peoples experiances were with whites and circle hooks this year.

Im not sure how many we have seen or caught this year. I do know I am staring to like the circle hook better then the J. I will try to think more about it and bet back to you.

Circle hooks not good for me....

0 - 8 on the white ones
1 - 20 on mahi
0 - 8 on Tuna

J-hooks

2 - 2 on the white ones (no guthooked fish)
59 for 63 (or so ) on the Mahi (many guthooked fish)
10 for 12 on the Tuna
1 - 1 Blue marlin

I need alot of practice...I really just started using them prior to a couple of Billfish/meatfish tournaments that required circles even if you were not in the billfish division....Bob

I know, I was just trying to make you feel better about your ratio.

Good topic though. Curious to see how the circles effected other peoples seasons.

I think it helped me a lot mentally practicing using circles on yellowfin, the pressure of missing a white in a tourny wasn't there, so it was easy to stay focused.

I really like using circle hooks and feel that my hook up ratio hasn't really been affected except a few guys on board just getting to excited and pushing up the drag as soon as the white grabbed their pitched bait.

I think im at
6-12 whites
1-1 wahoo
2-4 tuna
0-4 mahi
