Fishing and Boating Report – July 18, 2011
Dauphin County

On the Susquehanna River anglers are catching big flatheads below the Red Hill and York Haven dams. Baits being used are chubs and sunfish.

Huntingdon County

Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission Waterways Conservation Officers were assisted by Pennsylvania Game Commission Wildlife Conservation Officers & Deputy Wildlife Conservation Officers in carrying out boating safety enforcement details over the 4th of July holiday weekend. Throughout the four day holiday weekend these officers conducted 132 Safety Inspections of Watercrafts, 25 individuals were given field sobriety testing where Operation of a Watercraft while Under the Influence of Alcohol or a Controlled Substance was suspected, 7 individuals were placed under arrest for Operating a Watercraft while Under the Influence of Alcohol, 29 citations were issued for violations of Title 30 boating regulations, 2 citations were issued for violations of Title 30 fishing regulations and 114 warnings were given for violations of Title 30. Remember to boat safe and boat sober!

Juniata County

The Juniata River continues to drop in water level. Boaters using motors should use caution when navigating the river so they do not hit submerged rocks and cause damage to boat props or hulls. Unpowered boaters (kayaks, canoes and john boats) are reminded that a Launch Permit or Unpowered registration is required to use a PA Fish and Boat Commission Access. These permits can be picked up at the Court House or on the PA Fish and Boat Commission web site. Also, tubers are not permitted to use these access areas to launch or retreive tubes.

Anglers are catching channel catfish in the late evening on night crawlers and crayfish. Smallmouth bass are being caught using madtoms (aka stonecats). Anglers are reminded that below the Port Royal bridge (Rt 75 bridge) is under Catch and Release regulations for smallmouth bass.

Mifflin County

Anglers are catching smallmouth bass using madtoms (aka stonecats) in the Juniata River. Many fish are in the 14 to 18 inch category.

Perry County

Anglers are catching panfish and bass on Holman Lake (Little Buffalo State Park). Small baits such as worms and wax worms are working the best. Some small muskies are being caught. Anglers are reminded that the sizes for these toothy fish are 40 inches.

Carp
Anglers bow fishing are reminded that any carp, catfish or suckers that are shot with bow and arrow must be properly disposed of.

York County

Lake Redman continues to produce catches of bass and white perch. Also a few nice size striped bass are being caught near the dam. Smaller, but still fun to catch, panfish are hitting small poppers with fly fishing gear. Lake Williams bass are hitting tubes (green) and deep diving plugs. The best time to fish is still early morning and around sunset.

The Susquehanna River south of Bruner Island is providing bass anglers with a challenge to catch 15” plus smallmouth. A reminder that the new regulation for bass of catch and immediate release for this area is now in effect.

Trout fishing is still good but some areas are hard to get to because of thick vegetation. Live minnows and yellow/green power bait works best
