Fishing and Boating Report – July 29, 2010
Carbon County
Most area streams have been receiving little to no fishing activity. Anglers fishing the Lehigh River have caught trout and smallmouth bass during the early evening hours. Anglers fishing the mouths of the tributaries emptying into the river have had good success catching trout.
Water levels remain low on most area waterways including Mauch Chunk Lake. Nice size perch are being caught on different sections of the lake. Meal worms, live minnows or worms appeared to work well. The launch ramp construction has been completed at Mauch Chunk Lake. Boaters are reminded that due to low water conditions, to be on alert for submerged logs etc. Bass action was still good at Mauch Chunk Lake.

Boat traffic remained heavy at Beltzville Lake during the weekend. Walleye and panfish have been active in the Pine Run cove area of the lake. Striped bass have been active near the dam tower area of the lake. Persons are reminded that alcoholic beverages are prohibited at both Mauch Chunk Lake and Beltzville Lake including on both shore and on the water.
Lackawanna County
Fly anglers targeting trout in the Lackawanna River have been landing some nice fish over the past week.
Anglers have been locating plenty of trout at Merli Sarnoski Lake utilizing their fish finders and butterworms.
Boating traffic has been slow to moderate at area lakes including Lackawanna Lake.
Monroe County
Anglers of all ages have been out fishing from the shoreline and boats on the private community lakes. They have been catching all types of fish with all types of bait. Butterworms seem to be a hot bait item but even bread and corn are getting the job done. The time of the day and arrival of thunderstorms seemed to affect the fishing.
Anglers fishing at Tobyhanna Lake have had good luck catching bullhead on natural bait and pickerel and largemouth bass on natural bait and artificial lures.
Northern Pike County
Smallmouth and largemouth bass fishing at Lake Wallenpaupack has still been good. Bluegills have been biting well and catfish have been hitting in the later evening and early morning. The month of August is a great time to fish for walleye. Try using live bait such as herring.
Trout fishing in the Lackawaxen River has been good. The frequent water releases from Lake Wallenpaupack help keep the water cool. Brown and rainbow trout seemed to be hitting best.
The weather has been hot and will likely continue to be for the next few weeks. Please remember that boating and alcohol don’t mix and that it’s better to drink lots of cold water instead. Make sure that you have all of the required safety equipment on board and be courteous to other boaters.
Southern Pike County
Anglers have been catching a mixed bag of nice sized fish throughout the district. A few folks bait fishing Lake Loch Lomond landed several catfish in the 15 inch range and a several largemouth bass in the 2-3 pound range. One angler harvested a 25 inch chain pickerel from Hidden Lake over the weekend and a couple of anglers caught six trout from the Bushkill Creek near the Winona Falls Road Bridge on live bait and spinners.
Western Pike County
Anglers have had good luck catching largemouth and smallmouth bass using artificial and natural baits. Bullheads have been caught in the evening using grubs and worms.
