Peacock Bass Fishin In Florida

Hey guys, i was just wondering what types of lures that y'all use when targeting peacock bass in Florida. I like the x-rap's in as many colors as possible depending on the weather and water conditions. However, lately i have been having more luck with the soft plastics but the bite count has been down regardless. How has it been for y'all and whats working for ya?

Ok so maybe there are less people on this forum that fish for peacocks in south Florida so lets broaden the topic. If you fish for large mouth or peacock anywhere in the world, what type of lures/colors do you use?

One could almost say that a peacock bass is just a very very aggressive large mouth bass, at least that is what my experience has taught me here in south Florida. I have been targeting peacock bass and large mouth have struck many times. so for all those guys and gals out there that fish for large mouth your input may be more helpful that you think. And, of course, if you advice does work I'll be sure to let y'all know. Especially since it is getting warmer in Ft. Lauderdale they fish should be getting a lot more active.

What has worked for me has been the rapala x-rap with a blue top and light yellow belly, I don't know the model number but if anyone would like it i'll post it up. The peacock love that fast action and it seems like they strike it the most. Thanks in advance for all y'alls input!

Thanks, I can promise after you go once you'll be hooked, no pun intended. I would compare fighting a peacock to a tarpon, to scale of course, however for their size they put up a big fight! A 5lb. peacock fights and feels like a 10lb. large mouth, so I'm sure you can do the math from there. Good luck and I hope your able to head out for them sometime soon, thanks again!

I've been dreaming about going peacock bass fishing since 2005 or 2006. I went to a lake once to check it out but the car access was hard and it didn't look safe to stay there. Also I don't have a car so that doesn't help much

I bought tons of different lures, so I have a bunch to try

here are some pics to add to this thread.... The pictures of me in the jacket, i caught those peacock's on a top-water popper, blue top, white belly, red mouth, and about 2.5" long. Tons of fun when they strike it hard on the surface! The rest were caught with live bait, shiners. you could tell it was mating season with that lump on the head. I think the lump means female... anyone know for sure? And yes they were all released, UNHARMED!

well you are fishing the right places.

SOFLA: The general area that you are fishing is what I would call great fishing, simply for the reason that you can find big fish there at different times of the year. Now the fish count there has dropped quite a bit there. I recall going to that spot and catching 15-20 fish in 2hrs. The general area your fishing you have to be patient. Monday you could go out and not see a fish. Thursday you can go out and catch 5 peacock in the 2-5lb range. avoiding fishing the full moon around there as well. The peacock are sooo weary around here during this time.

this is the time of year where you wont catch many peacock potting/camping/nesting. One of two things are happening.

1.) The peacock with successful hatchings of their children are now follwing and protecting their children.

2.) Peacock beginning to school, even with a few largemouth. I saw a school of 16 the other day, so they are really getting together.
