Fishing Report August 16, 2011

The cooler nights are a definite blessing to us trout anglers. The last three nights have been in the low 60's here in Brevard and this is starting to cool the warm summer waters. The temperature on the Davidson this morning behind the shop was 65 degrees, a vast improvement from last week's 69 degree water in the morning. The guides reported that the fishing this morning, was a direct reflection of the cooler water temps.

The Davidson: The water in the hatchery section is still low but the fish are finally getting some relief from the warm water. If you are going to fish the hatchery section you will need a 9-12' leader tapered to at least 6x and probably 7x. Small midges or small terrestrials are the ticket for the few that are willing to eat. Most popular flies are a size 16-20 ant or a UFO midge in red, black or cream.

The Blue Line Streams (Avery, Looking Glass, etc...): These streams have been the best trout fishing as they stay cooler and more shaded. WE have been having luck with small Tennessee Wulffs, Yellow Stimulators, and most any small attractor style fly. Your leaders will have to be tapered to at least 5x and probably 6x but you can use a shorter 7.5' leader.

The Davidson Trophy Water: We will be reopening the trophy water on September 1, to unguided trips. We will be restocking in late September so be sure to make your reservations soon.

Smallmouth Bass: We are still having great smallmouth bass trips if you can catch the French Broad clear it has been great. Otherwise you will have to fish the lower Tuck or the Nolichucky. We are primarily using Clousers, Deceivers, and Half and half's as the fish are feeding heavily on the natural baitfish in the river.
