Crappie USA Tournament Results for Kentucky's Green River Lake
This past Saturday March 21st Crappie USA held a qualifying event at Kentucky's Green River Lake near Columbia, Kentucky. These anglers were competing for not only cash and prizes, but a chance to advance to the prestigious Cabela’s Crappie USA Classic. This year's classic will be held October 24th-27th, 2012 on the Barkley/Kentucky Lakes at Cadiz, Kentucky.
Semi-Pro Division Results
Taking first place was the Louisville, Kentucky lone angler Larry Clark with a weight of 6.38 pounds and earning $1,100.00. Larry was pulling purple/chartreuse hard baits in 14-15 feet of water north of the Holmes Bend Marina over a creek bed to catch over 60 fish for the day. Larry also captured second biggest fish of the event with a 1.61 pound crappie which earned him an additional $150.00.
Second place went to Jason Goforth of Harrodsburg, Kentucky and Rodney Goforth of Yosemite, Kentucky with a weight of 5.9 pounds and earning $600.00. Jason and Rodney were pulling hard baits in 15 feet of water north of the marina to catch 50 fish for the day.
In third place was Ronald and Ronald T. Hollingsworth of Clarksville, Ohio with a weight of 4.88 pounds and earning $400.00. The Hollingsworth team was also fishing north of the Holmes Bend Marina longline trolling 1/8 ounce blue tail with orange jig heads which worked best when pulled at 1.3 MPH. The team caught over 40 fish for the day.
David Jones of Columbia, Kentucky and Richard Williams of Paris, Tennessee took fourth place with a weight of 4.67 pounds. David and Richard were trolling blue/chartreuse and purple/chartreuse jigs tipped with live bait up river to catch over 70 fish for the day.
Fifth place went to the 3 person well-known team of Steve Ferguson of Puryear, Tennessee along with Levi and Joey Briggs of Dexter, Kentucky weighing in 4.6 pounds. Steve, Levi and Joey were slow trolling live bait and jigs over deeper areas north of Holmes Bend Marina to catch over 60 fish for the day, which many were caught suspended in the deep water.
Amateur Division Results
First place in the amateur division was Alan Carter of Murray, Kentucky and Tony Sheppard of Dexter, Kentucky with a total weight of 6.09 pounds and earning $900.00. Alan and Tony were fishing the main lake in at least 30 feet of water using live bait to catch over 60 keeper fish for the day.
Second place went to the Elizabethtown, Kentucky team of John Necessary and Travis Corbin with a weight of 5.9 pounds and earning $600.00. John and Travis were pulling hard baits in 14-18 feet of water where the Striker Shad seemed to work best to help the team catch over 40 keeper fish for the day including their 1.63 pound kicker fish which netted the team an additional $350.00 for big fish of the event.
Taking third place was the Georgetown, Kentucky team of David and Jerry Rodgers weighing in 5.48 pounds and earning $400.00. David and Jerry were fishing in 20 feet of water just north of the marina using black/chartreuse Southern Pro jigs to catch between 50 to 60 fish for the day.
In fourth was the Waynesburg, Kentucky team of Dustin and Scott Carrier weighing in 5.3 pounds and earning $250.00. Dustin and Scott were targeting spawning fish in 8 inches of water in the back of the creeks using live bait to catch over 40 keeper fish for the day.
Fifth place ended up in a tie with each team catching 5.13 pounds and each team earning $175.00.
Team 1 was Jerry Chadwick and Brandon George of Murray, Kentucky were fishing live bait straight down in 8-20 feet of water south of the marina on the main lake.
Team 2 was Roy Gander and RC Taylor of Sanford, Kentucky who were fishing live bait in the back of Snake Creek in 1-12 feet of water to catch 80 to 100 fish for the day.
Winning the Ranger Cup Award and $125.00 in the Amateur Division was the team of Dale Thompson and Mark Fields of Greensburg, Kentucky.

Crappie USA Free Kids Fishing Rodeo
In conjunction with the tournament Crappie USA held their Kids Rodeo on Saturday morning with several local children attending the event. All the participants signed up for a chance to win one of 6-$1,000.00 scholarships to be drawn for at the Cabela’s Crappie USA Classic.
Crappie USA and our anglers have contributed nearly $310,000.00 to the “Crappie Kids” Scholarships since 1997. We are very proud to be a part of the education process for the youngsters who participate in our tournaments as adult/youth teams and those who fish in the Crappie USA “Kids Fishing Rodeos”.
A special thanks goes out to Joey, Kelly and the staff at Holmes Bend Marina for hosting the Kids event where Stubby Steve's Attractant Bait was a big hit with several fish of a variety of species being caught. Stats for the Tournament:
Weather-A severe cold front hit Friday night with temperatures dropping into the 40's. Saturday temperatures were in the 50's with rain until 11:00AM then westerly winds 10-15 MPH.
