The "good" ice is averaging 12-13 inches - enough to see a fair number of ATV's and even the rare vehicle starting to move around. The "bad" areas, however, still host some open water (this is the stuff they keep showing on TV). We do not recommend driving vehicles on Mille Lacs at this point. We see a fair number of anglers chasing walleye and perch on the "main" part of Mille Lacs (outside the bays) and doing well. It's not the bite-of-a-lifetime, but it's not bad either - much of the walleye action is still around 15 feet, while the perch are hanging around the softer mud-bottom spots in the 25-30 foot range. Fatheads, shiners and waxies are the top baits - use these on light weight spoons (Slender Spoon, Willow Spoon) in bright colors (yellow, orange, silver). Northern action is still strong in Wahkon and Cove Bay. Suckers or big shiners are the ticket here. Stick to 10-12 feet.

Once again this winter we will be renting FL20's, power augers and underwater cameras. Be sure to reserve them ahead to assure availability.
Getting your house ready for the ice? We stock all sorts of "fish house stuff" like thermocouples, regulators, 12V light bulbs, mantles, globes and LP gas.
Auger dull? We have sharp new blades AND exchange blades in stock for most augers - spark plugs and oil too! Heck, we'll even fill your auger with pre-mixed gas and oil!
Finally, after having dug to a depth of 10 feet last year, New York scientists found traces of copper wire dating back 100 years and came to the conclusion that their ancestors already had a telephone network more than 100 years ago. Not to be outdone by the New Yorkers, a California archaeologist dug to a depth of 20 feet and shortly after, a story in an LA newspaper read: "California archaeologists' discover 200 year old copper wire, have concluded that their ancestors already had an advanced high-tech communications network a hundred years earlier than the New Yorkers." One week later, a local newspaper in Minnesota reported the following: "After digging as deep as 30 feet in his pasture near Red Wing, MN, Ole, a self-taught archaeologist, reported that he found absolutely nothing. Ole, has therefore concluded that 300 years ago, Minnesota had already gone wireless." Makes one proud to live in the great state of Minnesota.
Have a great weekend,
