I began 41 years ago fishing and catching my first bluegill at 3 years of age. I have learned life lessons about patience, persistence, positive expectation, respect for animal life, how to forget about stress and remember that the world is bigger than our little problems, I learned to explore and never stop being amazed by the wonder and remarkable beauty of God's creation, I learned the lesson of compassion and carefulness of releasing fish unharmed, and how to humanely and quickly end a fishes life if for eating purposes, I also discovered the excitement of feeling a fish tugging on the end of my line as it tries to escape with my bait or lure, and I think the most important lesson was to understand that we are a part of nature and that we have a moral obligation to care for and contribute to the outdoors we are fortunate to enjoy.
If it wasn't for fishing and the lessons I learned I would probably be in prison, as I grew up in the inner city of East Los Angeles, and would likely have gotten involved in the gang lifestyle that was all around me. I thank God for fishing and have done my best to teach my children the same reverence for this sacred act we get to do....wet a line and wait for the tug!![]()
